Tampa’s Florida Aquarium was delightful. While there you can also take a 90 minute boat excursion out into Tampa Bay and see some of their 500 wild Bottle-nosed Dolphins and some amazing diving Brown Pelicans.
Long Island Aquarium and Exhibition Center November 13, 2011

This week we took a ride out to Riverhead, Long Island to visit the Long Island Aquarium and Exhibition Center
(formerly called Atlantis Marine World Aquarium).
It is the home of lots of terrific, well lit, clean tanks filled with beautiful and amazing fish. It is also the home to African Penguins, sea lions, seals, otters and four Japanese Macaques (snow monkeys). The two older male snow monkeys, Pico and Juraco lived at the Central Park Zoo and moved to a special new home which was built for them seven years ago. They were joined this year by two younger snow monkeys, Zeppy and Oz, who also lived at the Central Park Zoo. It was great to see our little guys again. They all are looking great and seem to be enjoying the good life.
Enjoying this very short video of the Flamboyant Cuttlefish that we saw chowing down on some food. Be amazed at the tentacled-like projections that come from its mouth to grab the food.
Shedd Aquarium – Chicago June 16, 2011

Zoo #5 of our ‘Six Zoos in Six Days‘ zoo-cation was an aquarium (still counts) – the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. It has what other fine aquariums offer including an aquatic show, a Caribbean reef, Jellies, an Oceanarium, Penguins, Belugas and more. The best part was that it was air conditioned. The temperature in Chicago that day was hovering around 96 degrees. Ouch.

A recent trip to Brooklyn’s New York Aquarium did not disappoint. The newly designed Conservation Hall is beautiful as is the refreshed Glover’s Reef. My only regret was I did not walk down the street for a delicious Nathan’s hot dog. I continue my tradition of ending the year with a look from ‘behind’. It was a zoo-sational year for a zoo nut like me. Along with some of my like minded zoo pals we were able to visit new zoos and places around the country and thanks to many wonderful new friends get some amazing behind the scenes access. If you missed some of the visits, check out my photos from the Everglades, the Palm Beach Zoo, the Miami Metro Zoo, Flamingo Gardens, the Cleveland MetroParks Zoo, The Akron Zoo, The Toldedo Zoo, The Erie Zoo, The Pittsburgh Zoo and a personal favorite there, the Polar Bear Plunge, The Columbus Zoo, The Louisville Zoo, The Cincinnati Zoo and the best Insect House anywhere, The Newport Aquarium, Pittsburgh’s National Aviary, the always wonderful San Francisco Zoo, a very worthwhile VIP tour of Six Flags Wild Safari, Southwick’s Zoo, Whale and Dolphin watching, out of Gloucester, MA, the Cape May Zoo, the Raptor Trust, the Philadelphia Zoo, and of course home base, the Central Park Zoo where we all met the newest residents, the Mountain Coatis, Lobo, Lev and Wolfie . I am looking forward to new Zoo adventures in 2011. Don’t forget to watch Gus, the polar bear enjoying some snow in my video below.

Tis the season at the Central Park Zoo’s Winterfest! During the first three Fridays and Saturdays in December, the Zoo will be open until 6:30 p.m. so visitors can celebrate the season and stroll paths decked with thousands of sparking lights and festive greenery.
Guests will delight in the polar-themed performances by the WCS’ Wildlife Theater and enjoy live animal encounters in the Zoo Gallery. Don’t miss the snow leopards, polar bears and penguins receiving presents filled with their favorite treats, including fishsicles and festive fruits. All activities are included with Zoo admission ($12 for adults, $9 for senior citizens, $7 for children 3 to 12, and free for children under 3)* so don’t miss this “cool” experience for the whole family!

While at the Prospect Park Zoo we were treated to many wonderful sights. The two adorable baby boy Hamadryas baboons, born July 23 and 28, were a special treat. Mother’s Kaia and Rebecca were attentive and father Bole seemed very proud. The zoo is celebrating the arrival of the new baby baboons by partnering with Heart of Brooklyn by offering New Yorkers an opportunity to help name them. Starting Tuesday, Aug. 31, everyone can submit their suggestions at ProspectParkZoo.com.
We also got to meet Dixie, river otter Ogie’s new mate, new Pirahna, Rock Wallaby as well as many other fabulous faces. If you want to view these photos larger, go here.
