A visit to the Bronx Zoo at the end of March was a treat.  Lots to see and enjoy. (If you subscribe to my weekly Sunday photos (and get them in your in-box) you are probably not able to view my videos from your inbox image.  Just scroll up and click on the Blue link (which is the name of today’s send) and it will take you back to my ‘While at the Zoo’ website where you can watch the video selection.)

Splish splash they were takin’ a bath! The Central Park Zoo has a fabulous collection of waterfowl.  But they are not the only ones that enjoy splish splashing at the zoo.  Come visit!

My zoo-cation pal, Mary Schwalm has been in Indianapolis all week working for her newspaper, the Eagle Tribune, in North Andover, MA.  She went to the Indianapolis Zoo to see if their residents had an opinion on today’s Super Bowl.  She rigged it – but it was fun to watch.  Go Giants!

Hard to believe it is winter this weekend.  The temperatures are hovering around the 60 degree mark and the zoo is, as always, a great place to visit. Remember what it was like just one year ago? In case you forgot – here are two montages from around the same time last year – January 2 and January 16.

Below are some photos of this week’s winter fun (sans snow) at the Central Park Zoo.

Don’t forget, I will be presenting 2011 – A Year in Photos at the Central Park Zoo at the Fifth Avenue Apple store on January 11th at 7PM.  Come one, come all – it is free and it will be fun.

I enjoyed the first evening of Central Park Zoo’s Winterfest this past Friday night.  It was fun and beautifully lit with thousands of lights. I hope my photos below reflect the beauty of the event. There are still two Fridays and Saturdays in December to enjoy the zoo until 6:30 p.m. You can stop by in the afternoon or after work for a stroll under thousands of twinkling lights. Visit cold-weather creatures, enjoy crafts and Wildlife Theater, see two wintry 4-D features, and watch the animals enjoy fish-cicles, fruits, and other favorite treats during holiday enrichment sessions. For a break from the chilly air, warm up with birds, lemurs, and tortoises in the Tropic Zone, a steamy 80 degrees all year long. You can also do some holiday shopping at the Zootique and enjoy treats and hot cocoa in the Dancing Crane Cafe.

Fall fun for all at the Central Park Zoo.  This week’s photo montage features some of our beautiful mammals.  Check out Gus, our polar bear, Amaya, one of our red pandas, a snow leopard, one of our three coatis, a sea lion, snow monkey, cavies and a mound of banded mongooses. Also included is our fast growing Baby Irene Hope, born during Hurricane Irene and Oliver, one of our pot-bellied pigs. Those sensational ducks are rajahs, pink-eared and harlequin. Come visit!

As I send out this Sunday ‘While at the Zoo’ photo montage it is raining buckets in Manhattan. My dog Benny braved his morning walk and is now rolling around on the rug attempting to dry himself off.  When the rain stops come visit the Central Park Zoo to see our Patagonian baby Cavy, featured in today’s montage at one day old.  While you are visiting don’t forget to see our snow leopards, two red pandas, baby ibis chick, Gus our popular polar bear and a fabulous collection of birds.

Zoo #6 of our ‘Six Zoos in Six Days‘ zoo-cation was the Brookfield Zoo.  It has over 216 acres of habitats with a lot of walking between exhibits.  Did I mention how hot it was?  Despite the heat we had a fine visit.  They have one sensational interactive polar bear that kept our attention.  Hope you enjoyed this six zoo-cation as much as we did.  We are already planning our next adventure.

Zoo #4 of our ‘Six Zoos in Six Days‘ zoo-cation was the terrific, FREE, Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago. It is the perfect size, easy to get to and is the perfect people’s park.  Did I mention it is FREE?

Ida, our wonderful polar bear, was euthanized on Friday, June 3rd after veterinarians determined she had liver disease brought on by cancer.  Ida was born at the Buffalo Zoo and came to the Central Park Zoo when she was two.  She was seen by millions of Zoo visitors throughout the years.  She thrilled the crowds when she would hang around one of the large windows and stare at the adoring crowds.  She played with her toys, her buddy, Gus and brought joy to all.  I adored taking photos of her and she always seemed to be extremely cooperative by gazing right into my lens. Below is my photo homage to sweet Ida. You can also view the short video clip I made of Ida in 2007 as she posed at her window.
