Lookin at YouWildlife photography is great fun.  We wait and wait and wait for those special moments.  Sometimes, if we are lucky, the moment happens when your subject is now looking back at you, while you are looking at them. (Except for the bottom photo that cries out for the caption ‘No more photos!’).

Benny-Opens WidePhoto themes are fun.  Sometimes a theme pops into my head while at the zoo and other times the themes are generously offered by my subjects.  Today’s theme is ‘Open Wide.’  It was fun to put together. And yes, that is Benny the dog, opening wide for my camera at home. If you liked today’s photos check out these three other themed montages from 2012.

Happy Holidays from Casa Lobo‘Tis better to give than to receive. It is a great adage and we saw it first hand when some of the animals at the Central Park Zoo got surprise food treats this week disguised in festive holiday casing. Check out our snow leopard, snow monkeys, red pandas, Southern coatis, saki monkeys, black and white ruffed lemurs, banded mongoose, muntjac and cotton top tamarins being enriched by our gifts.

The handsome dog above is of course Benny, my oft photographed pooch.  A very Happy Holiday season to all of you from the gang at Casa Lobo.

If you subscribe to my weekly photos (and get them in your in-box) you are probably not able to view my videos from your inbox image.  Just scroll up and click on the Blue link (which is the name of today’s send) and it will take you back to my ‘While at the Zoo’ website where you can watch today’s video selection. Enjoy this video I took on December 20th, 2009 when we had a foot of snow fall in the City. Along with the snow our then three year old snow leopard got a holiday gift to play  with all day.

Those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer are lots of fun at the Central Park Zoo. This week’s assortment of fabulous animals features a very wet snow monkey, Hana, Zoey the snow leopard, Lobo the coati, one of the riot of colors poison dart frog, Biru the red panda, a white-naped crane, a bathing red bird of paradise, mousedeer, Chinstrap penguin and more.  That amazing pink color behind the snow monkey photo is the sensational crepe myrtle trees that bloom through the late summer. Come visit!

It has been about two months since I sent out photos from my home base – the Central Park Zoo.  There’s lots going on, as usual, at the zoo. Our four species of penguins are fattening up for the upcoming molting season. Gus, the polar bear, plays with his toys in the cool refreshing pool. The three coati brothers (Lobo, Zev and Wolfie) continue to be playful and active most of the day.  Our fabulous sea ducks cool themselves off in the sprinklers and ponds.  Come visit soon and meet our two new sensational Hyacinth Macaws, located directly outside the Penguin House. Other animals featured today are the red crested turaco, Rahjah sehlduck, Jambu fruit dove, April the sea lion, a muntjac, Atlantic puffin, crested coua, red panda and snow monkey.

May is a glorious month.  The recent rains have made the Central Park Zoo‘s gardens even more spectacular.  Come visit and see our red pandas, snow leopards, sea lions, lemurs, white-naped cranes, amazing tropical rain forest, our two new baby goats, Marble and Mica and much, much more. Here is special salute to Scooter (and her pals, April and Clarisse) featured in my June, 2007 video of Central Park Zoo’s California sea lions.  We will all miss Scooter. She was a very special sea lion. Spring at the Central Park Zoo is terrific. Come visit us and meet our four new Rockhopper Penguins, who join the other three species, the Gentoo, Chinstrap and King penguins. We also have an adorable baby lamb and a beautiful new goat. Our large waterfowl collection all look beautiful and are fun to watch as they display to one another.  There’s also lots of nest building to watch in the Tropical Aviary.

If you like my photos and enjoy taking pictures yourself, why not come to the zoo for one of my photo workshops this spring? There are still a few spots left in each workshop. The three workshops  are highlighted below. You can read all about them and sign up on line here.

– On April14th (8:30 to 11:30) we are repeating our popular Breakfast With the Birds adult class where you will have the chance to hear all about our amazing collection and then are able to photograph the birds during morning census.  The class finishes up at the Apple store for a fabulous editing tutorial from the techies at Apple.

– We also have a family program scheduled for Earth Day (Sunday, April 22nd from 10:00 to 11:30) and is geared to adults and kids (ages 6 to 18). Share the joy of wildlife and photography with the family. It will be fun and you can take the memories home through your photos.

– And finally, a new workshop called Urban Birds of Prey on Sunday May 20th (9:00 to 11:00) where you will meet some of our raptor ambassadors up-close and personal. This will afford you great opportunities to photograph and learn about these beautiful birds. Looking forward to seeing some of you soon at the Zoo.

The Central Park Zoo’s  four sea lions – Scooter, April, Katie and Edith sure know how to leap, play, soar and move the crowds.  Here are just a few of their acrobatics.

Zoos are a great place to see pairs of animals. This week’s photo montage is devoted to pairings of all sorts.  Happy Valentine’s Day to all and enjoy the video below that cracked me up. For those that are not familiar with my little dog, that is Benny above – looking as cute as he possibly can be.
