Enrichment is a big part of daily life at zoos. Hidden treats are a great way to keep the animals interested, busy and stimulated throughout the day. Summertime gives them even more enrichment as our many Central Park Zoo campers create enrichment for many of the zoo residents.  This photographer is enriched by being able to snap away as the animals enjoy their treats. Check out this video of zoo animals eating that I created back in 2007. If you subscribe to my weekly photos (and get them in your in-box) you are probably not able to view my videos from your inbox image.  Just scroll up and click on the Blue link (which is the name of today’s send) and it will take you back to my ‘While at the Zoo’ website where you can watch today’s video selection.

It has been about two months since I sent out photos from my home base – the Central Park Zoo.  There’s lots going on, as usual, at the zoo. Our four species of penguins are fattening up for the upcoming molting season. Gus, the polar bear, plays with his toys in the cool refreshing pool. The three coati brothers (Lobo, Zev and Wolfie) continue to be playful and active most of the day.  Our fabulous sea ducks cool themselves off in the sprinklers and ponds.  Come visit soon and meet our two new sensational Hyacinth Macaws, located directly outside the Penguin House. Other animals featured today are the red crested turaco, Rahjah sehlduck, Jambu fruit dove, April the sea lion, a muntjac, Atlantic puffin, crested coua, red panda and snow monkey.

May is a glorious month.  The recent rains have made the Central Park Zoo‘s gardens even more spectacular.  Come visit and see our red pandas, snow leopards, sea lions, lemurs, white-naped cranes, amazing tropical rain forest, our two new baby goats, Marble and Mica and much, much more. Here is special salute to Scooter (and her pals, April and Clarisse) featured in my June, 2007 video of Central Park Zoo’s California sea lions.  We will all miss Scooter. She was a very special sea lion. The Central Park Zoo’s  four sea lions – Scooter, April, Katie and Edith sure know how to leap, play, soar and move the crowds.  Here are just a few of their acrobatics.

If you like my photos and enjoy taking pictures yourself, why not come to the zoo for one of my photo workshops this spring? We have scheduled three workshops and you can read all about them and sign up on line here.

– One is a family program scheduled for Earth Day (Sunday, April 22nd from 10:00 to 11:30)) and is geared to adults and kids (ages 6 to 18). Share the joy of wildlife and photography with the family. It will be fun and you can take the memories home through your photos.

– On April14th (8:30 to 11:30) we are repeating our popular Breakfast With the Birds adult class where you will have the chance to hear all about our amazing collection and then are able to photograph the birds during morning census.  The class finishes up at the Apple store for a fabulous editing tutorial from the techies at Apple.

– And finally, a new workshop called Urban Birds of Prey on Sunday May 20th (9:00 to 11:00) where you will meet some of our raptor ambassadors up-close and personal. This will afford you great opportunities to photograph and learn about these beautiful birds. Looking forward to seeing some of you soon at the Zoo.

Splish splash they were takin’ a bath! The Central Park Zoo has a fabulous collection of waterfowl.  But they are not the only ones that enjoy splish splashing at the zoo.  Come visit!

My zoo-cation pal, Mary Schwalm has been in Indianapolis all week working for her newspaper, the Eagle Tribune, in North Andover, MA.  She went to the Indianapolis Zoo to see if their residents had an opinion on today’s Super Bowl.  She rigged it – but it was fun to watch.  Go Giants!

Hard to believe it is winter this weekend.  The temperatures are hovering around the 60 degree mark and the zoo is, as always, a great place to visit. Remember what it was like just one year ago? In case you forgot – here are two montages from around the same time last year – January 2 and January 16.

Below are some photos of this week’s winter fun (sans snow) at the Central Park Zoo.

Don’t forget, I will be presenting 2011 – A Year in Photos at the Central Park Zoo at the Fifth Avenue Apple store on January 11th at 7PM.  Come one, come all – it is free and it will be fun.

I enjoyed the first evening of Central Park Zoo’s Winterfest this past Friday night.  It was fun and beautifully lit with thousands of lights. I hope my photos below reflect the beauty of the event. There are still two Fridays and Saturdays in December to enjoy the zoo until 6:30 p.m. You can stop by in the afternoon or after work for a stroll under thousands of twinkling lights. Visit cold-weather creatures, enjoy crafts and Wildlife Theater, see two wintry 4-D features, and watch the animals enjoy fish-cicles, fruits, and other favorite treats during holiday enrichment sessions. For a break from the chilly air, warm up with birds, lemurs, and tortoises in the Tropic Zone, a steamy 80 degrees all year long. You can also do some holiday shopping at the Zootique and enjoy treats and hot cocoa in the Dancing Crane Cafe.

Today’s photo visit to the Central Park Zoo introduces you to one of our new white-naped cranes, two Philippine ducks and a Texas Tortoise.  Also find a gila monster, pink-eared ducks, emerald starling, poison dart frog,  two snow monkeys, two muntjacs, a Rajah duck, snow leopard and more.

Fall fun for all at the Central Park Zoo.  This week’s photo montage features some of our beautiful mammals.  Check out Gus, our polar bear, Amaya, one of our red pandas, a snow leopard, one of our three coatis, a sea lion, snow monkey, cavies and a mound of banded mongooses. Also included is our fast growing Baby Irene Hope, born during Hurricane Irene and Oliver, one of our pot-bellied pigs. Those sensational ducks are rajahs, pink-eared and harlequin. Come visit!
