For the fourth time in so many years I traveled to Jackson, New Jersey with friends to experience the fun of the Six Flags Wild Safari adventure. The first time I visited Six Flags we drove our own car and had a blast.  Since that time I have dipped into the Lobo piggy bank to experience their VIP private ‘off road’ adventure.  I have loved it each time.  Sorry to say they are renovating their entire park for the 2013 season.  I am sure it will be fun – but I will cherish all of the good times we had in our private tours these past years. If you want to see what they are up to in the coming year, click on this link and watch the video.

Check out the woman’s expression in the first photo of today’s montage.  I imagine she is thinking how she will explain this event to her insurance agent.  If you are wondering – it all ended fine and she (and we) shared a hearty laugh over the entire rhino traffic jam situation.

If you subscribe to my weekly photos (and get them in your in-box) you are probably not able to view my videos from your inbox image.  Just scroll up and click on the Blue link (which is the name of today’s send) and it will take you back to my ‘While at the Zoo’ website where you can watch today’s video selection below today’s montage from Wild Safari.

Finally, it is now officially fall and registration is open for my Central Park Zoo Fall Photography workshop.  The workshop is Sunday, November 11th from 9:00AM-11:00AM.  This class fills up quickly. Click on this Central Park Zoo link,  read all about the workshop and sign up for some guaranteed photo fun. There are many programs and classes for all ages.  Check them all out and plan for a fun fall and winter zoo experience.

This video bear and giraffe encounter was taken on a visit in 2010.

While in New England to attend a dear friend’s wedding this weekend, in addition to the festivities, we, of course, had to make time to go to the Franklin Park Zoo to see their sweet 18 month old baby gorilla and meet their adorable 18 day old baby ring-tailed lemur. Nebuchadrezzer, gave birth on March 19 inside Franklin Park Zoo’s Tropical Forest. Franklin Park Zoo has eight lemurs, including the new baby.  (If you subscribe to my weekly photos (and get them in your in-box) you are probably not able to view my videos from your inbox image.  Just scroll up and click on the Blue link (which is the name of today’s send) and it will take you back to my ‘While at the Zoo’ website where you can watch the video selection.)

My zoocation pal, Mary Schwalm, drove down to NYC for a very busy local mini-zoocation. One of our journeys took us to the Philadelphia Zoo.  We got to see their year old gibbon baby, 10 month old snow leopard cubs, new female lion and fast growing jaguar cub (that we saw last October) as well as a two month old adorable sifaka baby. Enjoy the photos and my video of the breeding Victoria Crowned Pigeons that were seen at the McNeil Avian Center. Zoos are a great place to see pairs of animals. This week’s photo montage is devoted to pairings of all sorts.  Happy Valentine’s Day to all and enjoy the video below that cracked me up. For those that are not familiar with my little dog, that is Benny above – looking as cute as he possibly can be.

Yellowstone National Park is spectacular anytime of the year but especially stunning in the winter. The crowds are gone and the wildlife and landscape are a snowy sensation.  Here is Part One of my photo montage/homage to Yellowstone’s winter wildlife.  For reference, the photos include the ever present bison (who have the right of way on the roads), pronghorn, big horn sheep, Barrow’s goldeneye ducks, a Dipper bird, Trumpeter swans and elk.

I had no idea that the nine-spotted ladybug was the insect of New York State until I read the article Ladybug, Ladybug, Welcome Back Home: Good News for the Official State Insect’ ‘It is not just any bug, but the native nine-spotted ladybug. And its reappearance is something of a relief, because it is the official New York State insect, even though the last recorded sighting of it in New York was 29 years ago’. Read the entire good news article here.  Doing a quick search I found that there are many sites dedicated to ladybugs. Who knew? Here is a good site and was mentioned in the New York Times article. .  Here are some frequently asked questions about lady bugs.

I took these photos back on Sept 21, 2011 when the horticulturist at the Central Park Zoo released a gazillion ladybugs into the tropical rainforest as eco-friendly aphid control.  It was fun to watch and those wonderful, industrious ladybugs work very quickly.  Enjoy the photos.

In case you missed the second video in the adorable Central Park Zoo Penguin Chick series – here it is. Life in the Penguin Nursery.

The Central Park Zoo had a banner baby year.  Along with over 100 ducklings (including the sensational Chinese Mergansers) eight penguin chicks were hatched (four gentoo and four chinstrap) and hand raised by the Zoo’s dedicated staff. I was lucky to be able to watch them grow and thrive.  Now you can see what the fuss was all about on the Central Park Zoo website.  Follow our now grown chicks and see how it all began.

Here is the first of WCS’ videos coming your way.  This one features, Juan Romero as he tells us about ‘The Real Chicks of Central Park Zoo : How to Foster a Penguin.’

This week we took a ride out to Riverhead, Long Island to visit the Long Island Aquarium and Exhibition Center
(formerly called Atlantis Marine World Aquarium).

It is the home of lots of terrific, well lit, clean tanks filled with beautiful and amazing fish.  It is also the home to African Penguins, sea lions, seals, otters and four Japanese Macaques (snow monkeys).  The two older male snow monkeys, Pico and Juraco lived at the Central Park Zoo  and moved to a special new home which was built for them seven years ago. They were joined this year by two younger snow monkeys, Zeppy and Oz, who also lived at the Central Park Zoo.  It was great to see our little guys again. They all are looking great and seem to be enjoying the good life.

Enjoying this very short video of the Flamboyant Cuttlefish that we saw chowing down on some food. Be amazed at the tentacled-like projections that come from its mouth to grab the food.
