Benny-Opens WidePhoto themes are fun.  Sometimes a theme pops into my head while at the zoo and other times the themes are generously offered by my subjects.  Today’s theme is ‘Open Wide.’  It was fun to put together. And yes, that is Benny the dog, opening wide for my camera at home. If you liked today’s photos check out these three other themed montages from 2012.

For those that are looking for a fun zoo photo outing, on Saturday, February 2nd (Groundhog Day) I will be running a Winter Photo Adventure for adults and children at the Central Park Zoo. We will go on a family scavenger hunt in the zoo using our cameras (there is a ‘theme’ involved).  Ticket price includes 1 child and 1 adult. (Ages 6-18 with adult.)  Sign up here – it is listed under ‘family programs.’

Last Sunday we took a trip to the New York Botanical Garden to see their lovely exhibit Monet’s Garden. It is on through October 21st so you still have time to see it. This tribute to French Impressionist Claude Monet showcases a seasonally changing interpretation of the gardens that inspired his art.  While I enjoyed the recreation of his Giverny bridge inside the Enid Haupt Conservatory I particularly enjoyed the lovely water lilies surrounding the conservatory. For those of you that need an animal photo fix each Sunday, in keeping with today’s flower theme, I have included old shot of Zeppy, the Central Park Zoo‘s former snow monkey with a flower.

For the fourth time in so many years I traveled to Jackson, New Jersey with friends to experience the fun of the Six Flags Wild Safari adventure. The first time I visited Six Flags we drove our own car and had a blast.  Since that time I have dipped into the Lobo piggy bank to experience their VIP private ‘off road’ adventure.  I have loved it each time.  Sorry to say they are renovating their entire park for the 2013 season.  I am sure it will be fun – but I will cherish all of the good times we had in our private tours these past years. If you want to see what they are up to in the coming year, click on this link and watch the video.

Check out the woman’s expression in the first photo of today’s montage.  I imagine she is thinking how she will explain this event to her insurance agent.  If you are wondering – it all ended fine and she (and we) shared a hearty laugh over the entire rhino traffic jam situation.

If you subscribe to my weekly photos (and get them in your in-box) you are probably not able to view my videos from your inbox image.  Just scroll up and click on the Blue link (which is the name of today’s send) and it will take you back to my ‘While at the Zoo’ website where you can watch today’s video selection below today’s montage from Wild Safari.

Finally, it is now officially fall and registration is open for my Central Park Zoo Fall Photography workshop.  The workshop is Sunday, November 11th from 9:00AM-11:00AM.  This class fills up quickly. Click on this Central Park Zoo link,  read all about the workshop and sign up for some guaranteed photo fun. There are many programs and classes for all ages.  Check them all out and plan for a fun fall and winter zoo experience.

This video bear and giraffe encounter was taken on a visit in 2010.

Recent news that the Bronx Zoo had three tiger cubs sent me traveling north to the Bronx yesterday. Who doesn’t love tiger cubs?  It was well worth the trip. The cubs are adorable.  Other delightful surprises included rock hyrax babies, a whole bunch of dwarf mongoose babies, a young sifaka and brown ruffed lemur and an adorable young sea lion pup.  All in all – a fine Saturday visit.

Don’t forget my Central Park Zoo Fall Photography workshop class has been moved to Sunday, November 11th from 9:00AM-11:00AM. The original date (Sunday, November 4th) conflicted with the NYC Marathon. This class fills up quickly. Click on this Central Park Zoo link,  read all about the workshop and sign up for some guaranteed photo fun. There are programs and classes for all ages.  Check them all out and plan for a fun fall and winter zoo experience.

While visiting good friends in New England two weeks ago we opted for a sensational private whale watch off the coast of Gloucester, Massachusetts.  It was a joyous adventure with the sighting of over 15 whales including some mothers and calves. When Captain Nick turned off the boat’s engine we could  hear the whales breathing.  Very exciting indeed.  If you subscribe to my weekly photos (and get them in your in-box) you are probably not able to view my videos from your inbox image.  Just scroll up and click on the Blue link (which is the name of today’s send) and it will take you back to my ‘While at the Zoo’ website where you can watch today’s video selection – beautiful whales.

It is getting to be that time of year when fall will soon bring some amazing colors.  I will be leading a Fall Photography workshop, once again at the Central Park Zoo on Sunday, Nov 4, 2012 from 9:00AM-11:00AM.  This class fills up quickly. Click on this Central Park Zoo link and sign up for some guaranteed photo fun before the zoo opens to the public.

An annual rite of summer’s passage includes a visit to good friends in Massachusetts and a return visit to the Southwick’s Zoo in Mendon, MA.  I call it our mini-zoocation. Southwick’s always has something new.  This visit included two adorable five month old playful warthogs, a young Ankole calf (aka Watusi), baby pot-bellied pigs and much more. If you subscribe to my weekly photos (and get them in your in-box) you are probably not able to view my videos from your inbox image.  Just scroll up and click on the Blue link (which is the name of today’s send) and it will take you back to my ‘While at the Zoo’ website where you can watch today’s video selection – the baby warthogs playing. Enjoy the fun.

The 8th and final zoo on our zoocation, was The Buffalo Zoo – and what a  zoo it is.  There were surprises around every corner.  It seems that sometimes a zoo map does not reveal all that there is to see. Not only did we see meerkat babies, we saw a tiny wallaby joey still in the pouch, agouti babies, a snow monkey baby, boat-billed heron chicks, and more.  Their tropical rainforest is sensational (complete with occasional rain) and to add icing to an already delicious cake, a former Central Park Zookeeper now works at the Buffalo Zoo and we were able get some memorable behind the scenes access. Thanks Shanna!

Speaking of zookeepers, today is the start of Zookeeper Appreciation Week.  If you happen to visit a zoo this week, why not tell a zookeeper how much you appreciate what they do – I know I will.

So this photo montage completes our 2012 summer zoocation. Does anyone have a favorite zoo they would like to tell me about?  Maybe my zoo buddy and I can start planning a zoocation from one of your suggestions (assuming we haven’t already visited).  She tells me we have been to 78 unique zoos together since we started this whole thing about five years ago.

Zoo #4 on our summer zoocation was the Rosamond Gifford Zoo at Burnet Park, Syracuse, New York. We met some new zoo friends who generously shared some of their time with behind the scenes activities for us.  The collection of animals was great, especially the delightful spectacled bear brothers and young penguins. Enjoy!

May is a glorious month.  The recent rains have made the Central Park Zoo‘s gardens even more spectacular.  Come visit and see our red pandas, snow leopards, sea lions, lemurs, white-naped cranes, amazing tropical rain forest, our two new baby goats, Marble and Mica and much, much more. Here is special salute to Scooter (and her pals, April and Clarisse) featured in my June, 2007 video of Central Park Zoo’s California sea lions.  We will all miss Scooter. She was a very special sea lion. My mother, Lillian Wolfe, is long gone, but her advice, warnings and general ‘Lili-isms’ live on in my daily life.  She taught me to fight the good fight, to write letters to City Hall when I was pissed and she also gave me my moral compass (one glance from Lillian told me instantly whether my behavior was acceptable or not – and I got a lot of glances).  My sister Terry and I remember many childhood events differently but we both agree that our mother was a  pistol. Here’s to Lillian Wolfe and all of the other mothers, caregivers, nurturers, pamperers, surrogates and loving coddlers out there.  You make it all work. And a huge salute to all of the Zoo mothers in today’s photo montage.
