Prosimians are the most primitive of the living primates, which also include the monkeys and apes. The name prosimian means pre-monkey. Here’s a  link that explains the differences among primates, prosimians and apes. The beautiful animals featured in today’s photo montage include black and white ruffed lemurs, Japanese macaques, Sakis, cotton-top and lion-headed tamarins and can all be seen at the Central Park Zoo.

Check out this up-close and personal polar bear encounter we had at the Lincoln Park Zoo below today’s montage.  It is guaranteed to cool you off in this summer’s heat.

The Central Park Zoo has successfully hatched eight critically endangered Chinese merganser ducklings — a first for any North American zoo. The eight ducklings were hatched, April 26, 2011. The zoo has two breeding pairs of Chinese mergansers, a species of sea duck found in eastern Asia. The Central Park Zoo maintains the largest public collection of sea ducks and the only zoo-kept Chinese Mergansers in North America. This great zoo news was everywhere this week.  Click on any of the links below to see the story, photo and details.

Happy Father’s Day!  Enjoy this photo salute to some of the animal kingdom’s Dads. On a different subject, yesterday was the celebration of the sixth anniversary of the day I adopted my little dog, Benny.  Savor this little video I created last year to honor his fifth anniversary.

Zoo #6 of our ‘Six Zoos in Six Days‘ zoo-cation was the Brookfield Zoo.  It has over 216 acres of habitats with a lot of walking between exhibits.  Did I mention how hot it was?  Despite the heat we had a fine visit.  They have one sensational interactive polar bear that kept our attention.  Hope you enjoyed this six zoo-cation as much as we did.  We are already planning our next adventure.

Six Zoos in Six Days – this year’s zoo-cation was a delight.  My plan is to send out one montage per day for the next six days.  Our first stop was to the NEW ZOO in Green Bay, Wisconsin.  Why the NEW ZOO you ask?  The Central Park Zoo‘s snow monkey, Manny, moved to Green Bay a few years ago.  Manny, now 10, sired two adorable babies and we just had to go visit him and the new arrivals.  He is surrounded by nine females and seems to be in monkey heaven. The zoo keepers were very generous with their time and we had a terrific visit.  For more info on these two new arrivals you can read from their website here.

Ida, our wonderful polar bear, was euthanized on Friday, June 3rd after veterinarians determined she had liver disease brought on by cancer.  Ida was born at the Buffalo Zoo and came to the Central Park Zoo when she was two.  She was seen by millions of Zoo visitors throughout the years.  She thrilled the crowds when she would hang around one of the large windows and stare at the adoring crowds.  She played with her toys, her buddy, Gus and brought joy to all.  I adored taking photos of her and she always seemed to be extremely cooperative by gazing right into my lens. Below is my photo homage to sweet Ida. You can also view the short video clip I made of Ida in 2007 as she posed at her window.
