Yellowstone’s Winter Landscape January 29, 2012

Here is Part Two of my photo homage/montage to Yellowstone National Park in winter. I am drawn to open spaces when I travel. Living in the vertical world of NYC, where canyons and bits and pieces of the sky are the usual order of the day it is quite a contrast to travel where the landscape goes on and on. You will notice that some of my favorite photos are largely horizontal. The snow creates pillows and curves in amazing vistas.
I would venture to say seeing a ‘sun dog’ in the morning sky was special (bottom photo). I had never seen an icy rainbow image surrounding the sun and it was memorable. The grayness of the winter sky cast deep shadows and surprising sparkles galore. Needless to say, the geologic mystery housed in Yellowstone is beauty to both the eye and the ear. Enjoy several seconds of both sound and light as Old Faithful and the Grand Geyser burst in the winter morning.

Apples and oranges are but two of the manyyummy foods that the animals at the Central Park Zoo get to eat each day. Friday night’s bat enrichment at the second weekend of Winterfest inspired me to create a montage out of some of my animal/food photos. Mangia!
– There is one more weekend of Winterfest at the Central Park Zoo. -You should try to come and bask in the beauty of the city lights while at the zoo.
– Be a Wildlife Photographer! Do you know a kid that is aged 9 through 12? Looking for that perfect gift? Sign him/her up for my photography workshop at the Central Park Zoo on January 7, 2012. There are still a few spaces available.
– My good friend and zoo-cation buddy Mary Schwalm has created a terrific 2012 animal calendar . Each calendar is just $10 (shipping will be at cost), a super bargain for a perfect unique and personal gift! As in years past, the calendar fits into a cd sized jewel case that doubles as its display case. Contact Mary for details.
– Check out the last installment of our eight penguin chick’s beginnings. My friend, Sue Cardillo the assistant curator at CPZ tells the rest of their story below.

I enjoyed the first evening of Central Park Zoo’s Winterfest this past Friday night. It was fun and beautifully lit with thousands of lights. I hope my photos below reflect the beauty of the event. There are still two Fridays and Saturdays in December to enjoy the zoo until 6:30 p.m. You can stop by in the afternoon or after work for a stroll under thousands of twinkling lights. Visit cold-weather creatures, enjoy crafts and Wildlife Theater, see two wintry 4-D features, and watch the animals enjoy fish-cicles, fruits, and other favorite treats during holiday enrichment sessions. For a break from the chilly air, warm up with birds, lemurs, and tortoises in the Tropic Zone, a steamy 80 degrees all year long. You can also do some holiday shopping at the Zootique and enjoy treats and hot cocoa in the Dancing Crane Cafe.

Last weekend found us traveling south to the always enchanting, Philadelphia Zoo. They have had a delightful baby boom. We only got to see the adorable jaguar cub but that was plenty of cuteness for one trip. We will return soon. Check out my video of Baby girl Batu, born in October of 2009, at three months old. Her mother is called Tua and father is named Sugi.

So what do you do ‘while at the zoo’ when it is pouring outside? I spent lots of time in the Central Park Zoo’s Tropical Aviary. Without bias I can honestly say that it is the best tropical aviary of any that I have seen of all of the zoos I have visited. It is a delight of color, sounds and flight.
In today’s montage you can spot our fledged Scarlet Ibis chick in the second row on the left. The video below spotlights some Scarlet Ibis chicks that I saw at the Bronx Zoo in 2007.
Want to take some photos like the ones you see below? There are a few spaces available for my Fall Foliage Photography Workshop at the Central Park Zoo on October 23, 2012. Sign up – it will be fun. The last part of the workshop will find us going to the Apple store for some fun lessons in editing from their resident genius gang.

I thought sharing some photos of adorable baby animals residing at the Central Park Zoo would give you a much needed smile on this most difficult of anniversary days. Smile at our baby banded mongooses, baby Patagonian cavy, Baby Irene Hope (the lamb born during Hurricane Irene), a Nicobar Pigeon chick, a young Red Panda, a very wet snow monkey, two gorgeous snow leopards and a very fast growing scarlet Ibis chick.
Check out the Fall/Winter Programs being offered at the Central Park Zoo including four of my photography workshops. You can also now register on line.
