A visit to Brooklyn’s Prospect Park Zoo is always fun. Their collection of animals grows each month. Check out the adorable baby golden lion tamarin born July 16th, to first time parents, Pablo and Teodora. Pablo, was born in 2004 and came to The Prospect Park Zoo from Zoo Atlanta. Teodora, was born at the Baton Rouge Zoo in 2008. Their pairing was a recommended breeding match through the national Species Survival Plan, a program that works to ensure the genetic diversity of endangered species in zoos and aquariums.
The red-eye tree frog was awake and energetic, as were the two tufted deer juveniles, meerkats, hornbills, stork, sea lions and more.
No doubt you have heard the story of the Central Park Zoo‘s little bundle of joy born during the weekend of Hurricane Irene. She has been named Irene Hope. Check out her cuteness:

This is the last zoo we visited on my recent visit to New England. The Franklin Park Zoo is located in Boston, and in one of Frederick Law Olmstead‘s beautiful parks across the United States. We delighted in the antics of 10 month old Baby Kambiri, the sweetest little baby gorilla and also enjoyed the beautiful one year old giant anteater, Jockamo. Check out tow new videos below today’s montage.

Hurricane Irene allowed me plenty of home time to sort through my photos from my recent trip to New England. Enjoy the adorable one week old flamingo chick that we spotted amongst a sea of pink feathers and very long legs at the Stone Zoo.

As Hurricane Irene blasts the NYC area and we are advised to stay indoors I flash back to last weekend’s quick trip to New England to visit friends. The goal was whale watching but the whales were out of range so we easily opted for visits to three zoos in two days. Here is the first of those visits (more later today). If you did not see my pre-hurricane Irene posts from yesterday, are homebound and looking for some visual entertainment check out this post: http://judylobo.wordpress.com/2011/08/27/deconstructing-casa-lobo/ and this one: http://judylobo.wordpress.com/2011/08/27/waiting/
Don’t forget to check out the adorable Mandrill baby video below today’s montage.

As I send out this Sunday ‘While at the Zoo’ photo montage it is raining buckets in Manhattan. My dog Benny braved his morning walk and is now rolling around on the rug attempting to dry himself off. When the rain stops come visit the Central Park Zoo to see our Patagonian baby Cavy, featured in today’s montage at one day old. While you are visiting don’t forget to see our snow leopards, two red pandas, baby ibis chick, Gus our popular polar bear and a fabulous collection of birds.

The four California sea lions (Scooter, April, Katie and Edith) at the Central Park Zoo never fail to dazzle the crowds with their daring do, acrobatics and just plain fun. Come visit and see them at their best at their three feeds – 11:30, 2 and 4 each day.
Don’t forget to check out our now three year old Katie when she was just a pup (2008) at the Bronx Zoo below today’s photo montage.

Think Snow in July July 24, 2011

While baking in this awful summer heat I recalled that on December 27, 2010 we got hit with about 20 inches of snow at the Central Park Zoo. I thought these cool snowy shots from that day might help to lower the blistering heat a bit as we are now in a 100 degree oven in the Baked Apple. If you are looking to cool off a bit more, check out a few of last winter’s photo montages and videos. Let it snow! , Central Park Zoo Snow Days and lastly, Yes, More Snow.

Today starts National ZooKeeper Appreciation Week. If you go to a zoo this week – tell a keeper or two that you appreciate what they do. I know that I will.
This week’s photo montage takes you to the Prospect Park Zoo in Brooklyn. The zoo looks beautiful as do all of the residents including the delightful rock wallaby family, emus, golden lion tamarins, pallas cats, baboons, red pandas, red-eye tree frogs, otters and more. Check out the Rock Wallaby family in this WCS video shot in May 2011 below the photo montage.

Prosimians are the most primitive of the living primates, which also include the monkeys and apes. The name prosimian means pre-monkey. Here’s a link that explains the differences among primates, prosimians and apes. The beautiful animals featured in today’s photo montage include black and white ruffed lemurs, Japanese macaques, Sakis, cotton-top and lion-headed tamarins and can all be seen at the Central Park Zoo.
Check out this up-close and personal polar bear encounter we had at the Lincoln Park Zoo below today’s montage. It is guaranteed to cool you off in this summer’s heat.
