I have been taking photos of gorgeous sunrises and sunsets from my apartment for the last 29 years. They never cease to amaze and inspire me. The skyline has changed (not for the better) but the light still comes dazzling through. My friend Robyn introduced me to the term ‘Alpenglow’ after I posted one of my photos on Instagram. Now I adore the word and look for those very special days when it happens. Alpenglow is a natural optical phenomenon often appearing as a reddish, rosy, or pinkish glow just before sunrise or sunset. It occurs when the sun is below the horizon and its light reflects off airborne particles, ice crystals, or clouds in the atmosphere, rather than directly illuminating the structures. I hope there is an Alpenglow in your future soon.

My friend Robyn and I ascended to another observatory this week. The Empire State Building was calling our name. It was a glorious day and it was not crowded at all. The views, as always, were spectacular. We groused about all of the ugly new buildings that obscure views and destroy the skyline. That said, we had good laughs and are talking about our next adventure.

After a few of the horrible smoke filled acrid air days we have had I was happy that we went up to Top of the Rock several weeks ago. My friend Robyn Roth-Moise and I like to visit observation decks. I hadn’t been to Top of the Rock in over 20 years and it was fun to revisit. It is located atop Rockefeller Center and has splendid views of the city I love. Enjoy today’s photos. If you like high places, here are a few of the other special spots to see this amazing city. The Edge , One World Observatory , Empire State Building , One Vanderbilt .

Last November my friend Robyn and I went up to The Summit during the daylight hours. We had a great time and vowed to return at some point for an evening visit. An opportunity arose and we jumped at the chance to visit one more time right before Christmas. We did not enjoy this visit as much as our first experience. We felt it was too crowded (even though there is a timed ticket maximum). There were also way too many posers hogging the window views and also too many maskless people. Despite my grumpiness we had a good time and the city does sparkle at night. We ended our visit with one of three offered cocktails on the 94th floor. My tip is if you visit The Summit, go during the daylight hours or visit at night during an off time of year. That said, the margarita was exceptional.
