New York Botanical Garden presents its 22nd annual Orchid Show. Their yearly celebration of all things orchid spotlights the vibrant setting of Mexico for The Orchid Show: Mexican ModernismThe show this year was conceived as a tribute to the great midcentury Mexican architect Luis Barragán (1902-88). If you enjoy color (and I do) this show will delight your eyes. NYBG’s orchid show is always a welcome diversion from the grays of winter. It is on thru April 27th. Visit and feast your eyes.

Flowers make us happy. We expect to see flowers in the spring but there is a special joy in seeing them pop up in fall. Hudson Yards once again presents the flower show Fleurs de Villes. This year the theme is ARTISTE – a floral series paying homage to remarkable artists spanning various disciplines. Fleurs de Villes ARTISTE features 15 fresh floral mannequins, each created by a different florist and inspired by accomplished artists from disciplines such as ballet, impressionist painting, literature, culinary arts, opera and more. From contemporary visionaries and trailblazers, to Masters throughout history, Fleurs de Villes ARTISTE celebrates art in all its forms. This beautiful display is on through October 13th on the first level at Hudson Yards. Go and smell the roses!

`Curiouser and curiouser!’ cried Alice as she entered the magical world in that rich story so long ago. The New York Botanical Garden creates a fun, beautiful and whimsical trip down Alice’s rabbit hole throughout the garden, Mertz Library and the Haupt Conservatory. Inside the Haupt Conservatory, discover thousands of vibrant flowers in imaginative horticultural displays that highlight the lush, blooming gardens of the Victorian era. Then dive deeper into Alice’s world in the Library—you’ll learn about the novel’s historical context and modern interpretations, including the stories of mind-altering plants, which were much-studied during the Victorian era and continue to be the subjects of cutting-edge scientific research today. The Victorian period in which Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865) was first published was a time of exploration and wonder that some might call mad. Age of Wonder shows you the era’s impact on this timeless story, with original manuscripts, illustrations, and rare first-edition printings of Alice. This exhibition is on through the end of October.

I have been attending the annual Orchid Show at the NYBG for a number of years. This year’s inspiring show was like no other. The Orchid Show brings the catwalk to the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory in a fashion-inspired celebration of all things orchids. The bold fun designs of New York’s rising stars of the stitch with work by Collina Strada by Hillary Taymour, Dauphinette by Olivia Cheng, and FLWR PSTL by Kristen Alpaugh all fashionistas who have created dramatic, picture-perfect floral displays at the Garden that capture the orchid’s best side. In our Instagrammable world NYBG gives you a chance to “walk the runway” and show off your own personal flair, your love for orchids, and your fashion-forward connections to the natural world. Because florals are always en vogue at NYBG. My buddy was decked out in floral finery. The best I could do was switch out my usual black turtleneck for a purple one. I encourage you to go see this festive show which is on thru April 21, 2024.

The New York Botanical Garden’s orchid show is in its 19th year. Once again Jeff Leatham’s bold and colorful vision unfolds through captivating installations and designs, transforming the historic Enid A. Haupt Conservatory into a different color experience and visual effect, like the turn of a kaleidoscope. Orchid towers of orange, yellow, and green, undulating fields of white, and overhead plumes of purple, together with artistic embellishments and a kaleidoscopic tunnel of lights, will delight visitors now thru May 1, 2022.

Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama  at age 92 is still going strong. This fun, colorful exhibit at the New York Botanical Garden is on through Halloween – which makes sense since she has a great admiration for pumpkins..as do I. ‘Kusama reveals her lifelong fascination with the natural world, beginning with her childhood spent in the greenhouses and fields of her family’s seed nursery. Her artistic concepts of obliteration, infinity, and eternity are inspired by her intimate engagement with the colors, patterns, and life cycles of plants and flowers’. Along with the fun installations in the Conservatory, there are several walk through immersive installations throughout the garden. We had a great time and the beautiful weather day was like icing on the cake. I highly recommend this to all.

We had a terrific visit to the New York Botanical Garden on Friday. The morning snow kept just about everyone else away as we lavished in the beauty of this inspiring showcase of Singapore’s national flower. I learned that orchids grow on every continent except Antarctica. The show goes until April 28th. I encourage you to visit. The photo above is my feeble attempt at growing two orchids. They have been alive for over a year so I guess I am doing an okay job. Plus – the cats don’t eat them.

We spent a delightful day at the NYBG where 17 rarely seen Hawaiian paintings by Georgia O’keeffe are on display. The Conservatory is adorned with flowers and plants from Hawaii that influenced these works. The show is on thru October 28th and I encourage you to visit. Don’t miss the short video and of course the paintings (in the Mertz Library) which explains why she went and how she was inspired by the islands.
