Gorilla Baby-Bronx ZooWe’ve been wanting to see the two gorilla babies at the Bronx Zoo and we were not disappointed. We also got some other grand surprises with a young Okapi, Wolf’s Guenon baby, Colobus baby,  Langur Baby, Brown ruffed lemur baby and the opening day of the Komodo dragon exhibit at Astor Court.  A fine visit indeed.BXZOOMAY2014

MJ-TamanduaIt was fun to introduce a group of seven fabulous ladies to the Staten Island Zoo this week.  Once again, General Curator and Vet, Marc Valitutto, was extremely generous with his time and access.  A shout out to Marc and all of the fabulous animals at the Staten Island Zoo.

Want to see some beautiful birds up close and personal? Next Sunday, June 1 is our final Breakfast with the Birds photo event of the season at the Central Park Zoo.  For details and tickets, go to the website here.SIZOOMAY2014

Bao Bao-National ZooA quick trip to DC to visit recently transplanted friends would not be complete without seeing the National Zoo’s eight month old black and white panda, Bao Bao. Our timing was perfect. We got to spend quality morning time with Bao Bao before she climbed up into a tree for a long nap. I am a sucker for baby animals and there is something even more special about a baby panda.NATIONALZOO5.2014

White-Naped Crane ChickMy mother, Lillian Wolfe, is long gone, but her advice, warnings and general ‘Lili-isms’ live on in our daily life.  She taught us to laugh at life, to think, to question authority, to march, to protest and generally act upon what we thought was wrong. She also gave  us our moral compass – one glance from Lillian told us instantly whether our behavior was acceptable or not – and I got a lot of glances.  My sister Terry and I remember many childhood events differently but we both agree that our mother was a  pistol. Here’s to Lillian Wolfe and all of the other mothers, caregivers, nurturers, pamperers, surrogates and loving coddlers out there.  You make it all work. And a huge salute to all of the Zoo mothers in today’s photo montage.

Next Sunday, May 18th, we will be having a Photo Workshop called ‘Urban Birds of Prey’ at the Central Park Zoo from 8:30 to 10:30. There are still places available for this fun class. Hope to see you then. MOTHERSDAY2014

MEMPHIS ZOO PANDAWe are now on our All Tennessee Zoocation. Not much time to edit photos -but stay tuned for photos in the coming Sundays. Here are a few fun memories from our time in Memphis. My zoocation buddy Mary Schwalm reminded me that we have now been to all of the zoos in the United States with Giant Pandas. She is looking for a new zoocation goal and is thinking about hippos.troygraceland

Baby TamanduaBack to back visits to the Staten Island Zoo was, as usual, terrific – thanks to General Curator and Veterinarian, Marc Valitutto.  Once again, Marc generously showed us around.  This week I focused my camera on some of the amazing and beautiful residents that I missed last week.  Of course, a visit with the popcorn smelling Opal, the baby Binturong, was a must as was another chance to see the little baby Tamandua. More sensational things will be happening at Staten Island in the next few months. I will be back for sure.SIZOOPART2

AFRICAN PYGMY FALCON CHICKSA quick trip up to New England mixing zoo business and pleasure made for a nice winter break.  A shout out to the staff at the Franklin Park Zoo for accommodating our mid-afternoon arrival and a big shout out to our friends in North Andover for their hospitality.  Two zoos in two days makes for lots of fun and a mini-zoocation.NEZOOS

BINTURONG BABYThis was my fourth visit to the Staten Island Zoo since my friend Marc Valitutto became the the General Curator and Veterinarian. Once again, Marc gave us a fabulous tour and showed us the amazing changes he has made in this 75 year old zoo. The collection has jumped from 750 to over 1500 animals and continues to grow.  We met the zoo’s newest adorable female baby binturong, (who smells just like popcorn) plus got to greet the sweetest baby Tamandua and Mom. Their new Amur Leopard exhibit is now open and at 4,500 square feet makes for a great visitor experience.  The cats are active and very close. A shout out to Marc for his generosity and continuing great work. The Staten Island Zoo, which proudly calls itself  ‘New York’s Biggest Little Zoo’ is a great place to visit.  We went via the Staten Island Ferry which in and of itself is a great adventure.STATENISLANDZOO3.2014

POLAR BEAR CUBA return trip to Toledo to visit old friends and new ones was  wonderful. Filled with three days of laughs, new adventures and terrific animal sightings. Ohio has lots of fine zoos – but this zoo is my favorite.TOLEDO
