I walk the streets of Manhattan daily. Unlike people who are lots younger than me, I do not hold my phone as if I were clutching onto my beating heart. I enjoy my surroundings. I explore the architecture, reflections, and diversity of our buildings. I started taking photos of different spires as they related to one another either complimentary or clashing. It seems to me that over the last 20 years our zoning code has gone out the window. The NYC Zoning code determines the allowable size and use of buildings, where they are located and the densities of the city’s neighborhoods. The City is divided into three basic zoning districts: Residential (R), Commercial (C), and Manufacturing (M), which are then further divided into low, medium, and high density districts. I know that sounds good on paper but in reality it no longer works. The city is always changing – sometimes for the good and sometimes not so good. Enjoy today’s spires and next time you are walking in your own city, put down your phone and enjoy the architecture.

My good friend Robyn and I went on a 2.5 hour guided tour of Rockefeller Center (which actually lasted 3.5 hours) that included a fascinating history of their art and architecture. This VIP (which means a bit pricey) tour also includes exclusive access to one of Rockefeller Center’s hidden rooftop gardens with a view of the Saks Fifth Avenue beautiful holiday display and a unique perspective of St Patrick’s Cathedral. Plus an expedited entry and private elevator access to the Top of the Rock observation deck, The new Beam Experience that allows visitors to recreate the famed 1932 photo “Lunch Atop a Skyscraper,” showing 11 workers eating lunch on a steel beam high above Manhattan streets while 30 Rock was under construction and a Photo Pass. Plus, this holiday season, the VIP Rock Pass also includes exclusive, unobscured viewing of the Tree, plus the Santa Photo Experience and the Christmas Tree Photo. I admit I was giddy about the Santa experience since I had never had a photo taken with Santa. It was a full, memorable visit. If you have the time, I highly suggest it be added to your holiday plans. And yes..it is crowded.

A branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Cloisters is located in beautiful Fort Tryon Park, overlooking the Hudson River. The museum and gardens are devoted to the art of medieval Europe. I love this place. It is a quick trip on the A train and a lovely walk through the park. On your way to the Cloisters, do not forget to stop and have a fabulous lunch at the New Leaf Cafe. The cafe is a part of Bette Midler’s NYRP which is a non-profit organization dedicated to transforming open space in underserved communities to create a greener, more sustainable New York City. In partnership with the City of New York, NYRP is also leading MillionTreesNYC – an initiative to plant and care for one million new trees throughout New York City’s five boroughs by 2017. All proceeds from the New Leaf Cafe support New York Restoration Project’s mission of turning forgotten spaces into growing places.

Regardless of your opinion about explorer Christopher Columbus, this public art installation at Columbus Circle is interesting and thought provoking. Japanese artist Tatzu Nishi continues his oeuvre of transforming statues, monuments and architectural details. We get an intimate perspective of the statue, fabulous views and a six story walk up for exercise. You have until November 18th to check it out. It is free and worth your time.
