‘Swimming with the fishes’ is a famous line spoken by Peter Clemenza in The Godfather (directed by Francis Ford Coppola, 1972). I have always wanted you use it as a photo montage title so even though everything pictured in today’s montage is very much alive, here it is. My friend Robyn and I headed out to Coney Island this week for a fun adventure to the NY Aquarium on a beautiful September day and had a great time. Coney Island is filled with wonderful memories from my Brooklyn childhood and visiting is always a pleasure with a mandatory lunch at Nathan’s of course. Go visit – you will be glad you did.

“I once started out to walk around the world but ended up in Brooklyn, that Bridge was too much for me.” – I adore Coney Island. I have precious, fun memories of time spent at Coney Island and the New York Aquarium as a kid. I even recall when the NY Aquarium opened in its present location in 1957. The history of the NYAQ is quite interesting. I try to get to Coney Island every few months and never fail to go to Nathan’s for lunch. Ten years after Hurricane Sandy devastated the area the New York Aquarium is finally fully reopened and well worth your time to visit. Don’t forget to visit Nathan’s too. Yum!

My California family visited NYC Thanksgiving week. We did lots of great fun touristy things like walking over the Brooklyn Bridge and then having Grimaldi’s pizza in Brooklyn (yum), the Thanksgiving Day parade, the High Line and the Vessel at Hudson Yards. Not to be missed was a chance to go to Coney Island for some delicious Nathan’s hot dogs and fries. While at Coney Island we also visited the NY Aquarium. We were lucky that it was not crowded and could spend more quality time with these beautiful sea creatures. It was a fabulous week. Two weeks to go until our February 9th Central Park Zoo Valentine themed photo session. Sign up here for some before the zoo opens photo fun.

Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium in Tacoma, WA was stop #3 on our Pacific Northwest 2019 Zoocation. It is a beautiful facility in a spectacular location. We were fortunate to see their eight red wolf cubs (now teenagers) during a keeper talk and feed. Also got to see their adorable tapir baby Kazu. I was especially taken by their puffin habitat and of course seeing their two walrus’ who are on their way to San Diego for breeding was very special. Many of you will recognize the New York Aquarium’s Kulu (featured in my title photo). A special shout out to Malia for spending time with us upon our arrival.

Nothing like Coney Island on a frigid winter’s day with a visit to Nathan’s (yum) and Brooklyn’s NY Aquarium. The Aquarium is still undergoing construction from the devastation of Hurricane Sandy and the promises of new and exciting exhibits will be happening soon(ish). A huge shout out to Kayla, Martha, the keeper staff and the amazing Nuka the walrus for making us feel so very welcome. We will be back.
