Today is International Primate Day! The order Primates is one of the most species-rich groups of mammals, third only to Bats and Rodents. Over 500 species belong to the primate order, including lemurs, tarsiers, monkeys, and apes! Two thirds of all primates can be found in just four countries – Brazil, Madagascar, Indonesia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Primates mostly live in the jungles of Central & South America, Africa, and Southeast Asia. However there are a few unique species that live in temperate areas, where there are warm summers, but winters can become very cold and snowy. Most primates are found living near the equator. Primates, ranging from charismatic chimpanzees and the gentle gorillas to the elusive monkeys that share a unique connection with humans due to their striking similarities in behavior, intelligence, and genetic makeup. More than one-third of primate species are considered critically endangered or vulnerable according to the IUCN (The International Union for Conservation of Nature). Primates serve an important role in maintaining healthy forests and ecosystem, which is why protecting them is so important. It was fun putting together today’s montage and revisiting many of the zoos that we have been happy to visit. Enjoy today’s post my fellow primates!

This is day 142 for me being home during COVID19. At my good pal Mary Schwalm’s request I am continuing with my theme of children’s games. Since Mary’s favorite zoo animal is the hippo – here we go. Hungry Hungry Hippos is a table top game for 2–4 players. The idea for the game was published in 1967 by toy inventor Fred Kroll and it was introduced in 1978. The objective of the game is for each player to collect as many marbles as possible with their ‘hippo.’ These fun photos were taken at the Toledo Zoo (thanks Jeff), Sedgwick County Zoo and the Dickerson Park Zoo (thanks Katniss)). The two photos where both Mary and I are feeding the hippo is actually Henry, little Fiona’s father, before he moved to Cincinnati. RIP Henry. You were an amazing hippo. Stay safe please and wear a mask.

Last months visit to see old friends at the Toledo Zoo was simply terrific. The zoo grows bigger and better with each of my visits and this time I was lucky enough to see the newly opened Promedica Museum of Natural History too. I do not have photos of the new museum in this week’s montage but trust me, it was fabulous. There is so much to see and explore in this expanding zoo/museum/aquarium it is a full day’s visit. I have visited my friends eight times since they relocated to Toledo and each journey is special. I’ll be back for sure.

We headed west last week to visit good friends in Toledo, South Bend and Cleveland. It was a whirlwind planned four days (and with one flight cancellation became five days). A shout out to Karen, Olive and Chuck for being generous and great hosts. Zoo fun for all.

Couldn’t resist the play on words about Toledo in today’s title. I have made umpteen trips to Toledo to visit good friends who have relocated there in the past few years. Every visit gets better and better. The Toledo Zoo grows more expansively each year and it is always a fun and adventurous place to visit. A shout out to Jeff, Jason, John, Chuck, Karen, Juan, Baby Olive, Juba, Leela, Picasso and Zack for the fun and laughs. I will be back soon.

Our whirlwind visit to Michigan, Indiana and Ohio winds up at the Toledo Zoo where several of my good friends now work. It is always fun to visit this terrific zoo, share new adventures and see an amazing collection. This has been a great end of summer mini-zoocation.

It is bittersweet when zoo friends depart NYC for new adventures elsewhere – but the good news is that I get to visit them wherever they go. So our recent impromptu mini zoocation saw us return to see old friends again at the Toledo Zoo. This zoo always has new things to see. Thanks to Jeff, Terry, Randi, Andy, John, Juan and Chuck for their time and generosity. Our visit was most memorable – and we will be back.

Another amazing visit to the Toledo Zoo to see good friends and have mini-reunions. Got to see my first Tasmanian Devil, their adorable baby orangutan, juvenile yaks and reindeer, young camels, hungry sloths, got to touch an octopus and see their beautiful display of holiday lights. Sheer delight was had by being able to hold their young Eurasian Eagle Owl, named Loup, on my arm. Very, very cool. Thanks everyone – I’ll be back.

It is always a bit sad when zoo friends depart NYC for new adventures elsewhere – but the good news is that I get to visit them wherever they go. So last week’s return to see old friends at the Toledo Zoo was, as always, lots of fun. The zoo always has new things to see. I was partial to see one of their new wolves, named Lobo. Thanks to Jeff, Juan and Chuck for their time and generosity. My visit was great – and I will be back.

What do zoo fans do in their free time? We visit other zoos, of course. While visiting the fabulous Toledo Zoo last week, we took a ride to the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo in nearby Indiana. It has been on my ‘to do’ list for a long time and I was not disappointed. The zoo’s history is interesting and their exhibit animals are varied and unique. The zoo is open just six months a year and is loyally supported by it’s citizenry.
Next Sunday (October 19th) is our Central Park Zoo fall foliage photography workshop featuring enrichment pumpkins and fun for all. There are still a few places available – guaranteed fun.
Also – on Saturday, November 8th from 8:30 to 10:30, we are running another photography opportunity. Come one, come all. Check out all of the details (workshop includes breakfast and a chance to speak with our hard working keepers at their exhibits).
