Remember writing postcards especially when you traveled? I used to send myself postcards at the end of a trip to see how long it took to get to my home. Once again the Museum of the City of NY has brought us an exhibit that makes one smile. During the 1920s and ’30s, the bold new look of Art Deco heralded New York’s arrival as a cosmopolitan metropolis: a center of architecture, design, fashion, and culture. The picture postcard, a form of modern communication, transmitted vibrant images and messages around the globe. Art Deco City: New York Postcards from the Leonard A. Lauder Collection illuminates the key role postcards played in transforming New York into an international capital during the years between World Wars. Featuring over 250 postcards as well as decorative arts, fashion, photography, drawings, and architectural models, Art Deco City immerses you into the dazzling style that defined the modern city. That said – I most certainly was underdressed. More than an aesthetic, Art Deco was the look that sold the city to the world. This exhibit is on through February 17, 2025. While visiting the museum please do not forget to experience the heart pulsing, fun, fast paced, colorful, “You Are Here” exhibit (which is right next to the postcards) and draws on the rich archive of movies set in New York, combining thousands of cinematic moments across 16 screens. That delightful movie experience is on through October of 2025. I have seen it multiple times and have enjoyed it over and over again. FYI – The MCNY is open every day.

‘Swimming with the fishes’ is a famous line spoken by Peter Clemenza in The Godfather (directed by Francis Ford Coppola, 1972). I have always wanted you use it as a photo montage title so even though everything pictured in today’s montage is very much alive, here it is. My friend Robyn and I headed out to Coney Island this week for a fun adventure to the NY Aquarium on a beautiful September day and had a great time. Coney Island is filled with wonderful memories from my Brooklyn childhood and visiting is always a pleasure with a mandatory lunch at Nathan’s of course. Go visit – you will be glad you did.

“I once started out to walk around the world but ended up in Brooklyn, that Bridge was too much for me.” – I adore Coney Island. I have precious, fun memories of time spent at Coney Island and the New York Aquarium as a kid. I even recall when the NY Aquarium opened in its present location in 1957. The history of the NYAQ is quite interesting. I try to get to Coney Island every few months and never fail to go to Nathan’s for lunch. Ten years after Hurricane Sandy devastated the area the New York Aquarium is finally fully reopened and well worth your time to visit. Don’t forget to visit Nathan’s too. Yum!

My last visit to Brooklyn’s New York Aquarium was in mid-March. It was cold and damp. The upside was that it wasn’t crowded at all. This visit was fun even though there were many more visitors enjoying the summer in Coney Island. We sat through their delightful sea lion behavior show which I had not seen in many years. All in all we had a fun visit which of course included a walk down the boardwalk and a visit to famous Nathan’s. Yum!

Nothing like Coney Island on a frigid winter’s day with a visit to Nathan’s (yum) and Brooklyn’s NY Aquarium. The Aquarium is still undergoing construction from the devastation of Hurricane Sandy and the promises of new and exciting exhibits will be happening soon(ish). A huge shout out to Kayla, Martha, the keeper staff and the amazing Nuka the walrus for making us feel so very welcome. We will be back.
