Pride and Prejudice June 26, 2022

It has been a long tough week for most of us. It is incomprehensible to lose a Constitutional right. The Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution provides a fundamental “right to privacy” that protects a pregnant woman’s liberty to choose whether to have an abortion. That all changed on Friday with the outrageous SCOTUS decision. Thought I would try to put a smile or two on faces out there by sharing some photos of my little collection of critters as they celebrate Pride without prejudice.

The photo above was taken before the beginning of time. It is of my father, my dear sister and me. My father is gone a very long time and our memories of him (while all good) are fuzzy. He was kind, funny and sang a little like Perry Como. He loved magic and playing pinochle. I even remember some of his card buddies names – Blind Jimmy and Fat Al are two that come to mind. The animal kingdom is dominated by female caregivers but there are exceptions. I have included some of those joint caregivers in today’s salute to fathers. Happy Father’s Day!

Grizzly bears are back at the Central Park Zoo. Come visit and welcome Amber, Luna and Treena along with the rest of our amazing collection. You still need a timed ticket even if you are a member. The weather is great and the animals are active.

The Folk Art Museum is a wonderful place to visit (and it is free.) Folk art is self taught art and is rooted in traditions that come from community and culture. Examples include: weather vanes, old store signs and carved figures, itinerant portraits, carousel horses, fire buckets, painted game boards, cast iron doorstops and many other similar lines of highly collectible “whimsical” antiques. For six decades, the American Folk Art Museum’s exhibition program has inspired critical acclaim and public interest while breaking new scholarly ground. This current installation in the Audrey B. Heckler Gallery highlights key exhibitions in the history of the Museum and features a selection of beloved works of art and rarely seen documents from the Museum’s archives. I shared another wonderful exhibit from this space last summer called Blowin’ in the Wind.

I want to wish a very Happy Mother’s Day to all to all of the mothers, caregivers, nurturers, pamperers, surrogates and loving coddlers out there regardless of how you celebrate the day. Our mother, Lillian Wolfe, is long gone, but her advice, warnings and general ‘Lili-isms’ live on in our daily lives.  She taught us to laugh at life, to think, to question authority, to march, to protest – to fight the good fight. She also gave  us our moral compass – one glance from Lillian told us instantly whether our behavior was acceptable or not – and I got a lot of glances.  My sister Terry and I remember many childhood events differently but we both agree that our mother was a pistol. Here’s to Lillian Wolfe – she formed and informed what we are today.

Took a trip to the Bronx Zoo about a month ago to meet up with some good friends and their kids. It was a fun visit but we did not get to see much of the zoo (again, kids). Enjoy the photos and happy May to one and all.

Another West Side Story April 24, 2022

The West Side of Manhattan is growing and changing in a mostly good way. Pier 57 is the latest free, public space opened this week (thanks to Google)and I decided to check it out early on Earth Day. The food hall is not open yet but it surely will draw a crowd and is located right next to the wonderful Little Island. I decided to walk home via the High Line which is also one of my favorite spots (if you can get there early). Since it opened in 2009 the surrounding area has encroached ever closer to this lovely public space and the construction seems endless. Hudson Yards is at the end of the High Line and has an observation deck called The Edge which I went to a little over a year ago. Get out and explore Manhattan if you can. It is great exercise and the views are outstanding. Hint: go early because the tourists are back.

Truth be told I would much rather have a pretzel than a piece of candy. That said – I do love all kinds of holiday stuff. So with candy in mind I headed down to the Lower East Side to my favorite candy store, Economy Candy . My search for Peeps was stopped quickly as the manager told me that the factory had closed down during Covid and he could not get any Pepe’s  this year. Sigh. But I found lots of other goodies that filled my eye with color and shouting graphics. What did I buy? I bought yummy chocolate covered matzoh. Wishing all a happy Easter, Passover and Ramadan.

I am not a fashionista. I pretty much wear the same thing everyday. That said – I do appreciate fashion as expression and as an art form. The Museum of Art and Design never fails to have thought provoking and unusual exhibitions and this is one of them. From their website – ‘The first global survey exhibition dedicated to the use of clothing as a medium of visual art, Garmenting: Costume as Contemporary Art examines work by thirty-five international contemporary artists. By making or altering clothing for expressive purposes, these artists create garments, sculpture, installation, and performance art that transform dress into a critical tool. Adopted globally as an artistic strategy, garmenting uses the language of fashion to challenge traditional divisions of form and function, cast a critical eye on the construction of gender, advance political activism, and address cultural difference’. If you have never been to this place I highly suggest you visit. It is at Columbus Circle and has grand views of Central Park and a wonderful restaurant on the top floor.
