Red Panda SelfieYesterday, September 20th was International Red Panda Day. We were fortunate this year to meet a lot of red pandas – especially on our Tennessee Zoocation and at the National Zoo’s SCBI. Today’s montage is dedicated to some of those gorgeous creatures including Rocco, Wendee, James, Wyatt, Amaya, Biru, Azizi and Jabari.  Here are seven fun things you may not know about red pandas. CC the SlothWhat a treat to introduce two out of town friends to the fun at the always terrific Staten Island Zoo. We got to meet a new young Ground Hornbill, along with old friends such as CC the sloth, Gregory the Fennec Fox, the fast growing Arctic Fox pups and of course, the popcorn smelling adorable, baby Binturong.  Thanks again to Vet and General Curator, Marc Valitutto for his time and energy.  We loved our visit (and will be back).SIZOO9.2014

WoodlandParkChickWe had a terrific trip to Seattle Washington this week and of course visited the Woodland Park Zoo.  There are so many wonderful things to do in Seattle our zoo visit was abbreviated – but terrific none the less. Below today’s montage you will find a short clip of a large male sea lion enjoying a fresh salmon catch at Seattle’s Hiram M. Chittenden Locks. Enjoy!WOODLANDPARKZOO

Binturong Baby -Staten Island ZooAnother terrific, fun visit to the Staten Island Zoo. This gem of a zoo gets better with each passing week. Thanks again to General Curator and Vet, Marc Valitutto for his time and insight. We all had loads of fun meeting a baby binturong (still smells like popcorn), adorable arctic fox pups, a kangaroo joey, sweet fennec fox, Neeble, the young cassowary, a baby Patagonian cavy, MJ, the almost full grown Tamandua and of course, CC the wonder sloth. Enjoy!SIZOO7.2014

KNOXVILLE BEAROur final zoo stop on our all Tennessee zoocation was the Knoxville Zoo.  There’s lots going on here and many changes are taking place.  Black Bear Falls was especially exciting as was Chimp ridge, Stokely African Elephant Preserve and the Boyd Family Red Panda Village.  A special shout out to Sarah Glass, Curator of Red Pandas and Special Exhibits, for giving us so much of her valuable time. Plus, bonus photos for a very Happy Father’s Day!KNOXVILLEZOOFATHERSDAY2014

WENDY-CHATTANOOGA ZOOOur third zoo on our all Tennessee Zoocation was the delightful Chattanooga Zoo.  Acreage-wise it was the smallest on our trip but the most memorable.  They have a terrific collection of animals with wonderful sight lines for both casual visitors and photographers.  A huge shout out to Director Darde Long and education specialist and great guide,  James Brantley for their hospitality, spirit and generosity of time.CHATTANOOGAZOO

TENNESSEEAQToday, June 8th, is World Ocean’s Day so I thought it fitting to share photos from our fourth stop on our all Tennessee zoocation –  the beautiful Tennessee Aquarium.  This 1992 riverfront facility single handedly rejuvenated the downtown area of Chattanooga. Speaking of Chattanooga, it is the only city with its own typeface .  And, while in Chattanooga, a must see stop is of course, the Chattanooga Choo Choo (photos below today’s montage). All you train enthusiasts out there should check out the Choo Choo and the hotel. Fun!

And remember, every time you visit your local aquarium or zoo you are helping to support conservation projects locally and worldwide. This year, over 80 AZA-accredited facilities are holding events in honor of World Ocean’s Day.TENNAQ

nashvilleThe Nashville Zoo at Grassmere was our second stop on our all Tennessee zoocation. It is located on 200 acres of an historic plantation (yikes) farm. Exhibits include – The African Savanna, Lynx, Bairds Tapir, The Bamboo Trail, Critter Encounters, The Unseen New World, Flamingo Lagoon, Pantanal and the fun Gibbon Island. If you are in Nashville, this zoo is definitely worth a visit.NASHVILLEZOO

MEMPHIS BONOBO BABYOur all Tennessee Zoocation 2014 was wildly successful. The 70 acre Memphis Zoo was our first stop (after Graceland). The Zoo’s animal inhabitants reside in one-of-a-kind exhibitry, such as Cat Country, Primate Canyon, Animals of the Night, Northwest Passage, Teton Trek and China – home to giant pandas YaYa and Le Le. (And yes, we have now seen all of the giant pandas residing in the US). A special shout out to Sr. Veterinarian, Felicia Knightly, who was so very generous with her time. We loved our visit.MEMPHISZOO

Gorilla Baby-Bronx ZooWe’ve been wanting to see the two gorilla babies at the Bronx Zoo and we were not disappointed. We also got some other grand surprises with a young Okapi, Wolf’s Guenon baby, Colobus baby,  Langur Baby, Brown ruffed lemur baby and the opening day of the Komodo dragon exhibit at Astor Court.  A fine visit indeed.BXZOOMAY2014
