It has been almost one year since I visited the delightful 18 acre Queens Zoo. My goal was to see their adorable eight month old Andean bear cubs. I was not disappointed. The cubs were active until late morning. They got tired pretty much the same time that I did. I was charmed by the noisy but beautiful thick-billed parrots, lynx, pumas, elk, sea lions, bison, family farm and of course their pair of pudu. I encourage you to visit while these cubs are still young. You too can be Queen (or King) for a day.

It has been three years since I ventured out to the Queens Zoo. My goal was to see the eight month old Andean (aka Spectacled) bear cubs Brienne and Benny. The female and male cubs were born in January to mother Nicole and father Bouba. My ultra long wait for the cubs to appear was worth the wait. They are pure joy and adorable. I encourage a visit before they grow up. Might I suggest you also visit the Queens Museum (a stone’s throw away from the zoo) and see their amazing NYC panorama. While I have your attention I wanted to give you a heads up about our Central Park Zoo Fall Photo Experience. It is ‘live’ on the WCS website now. The session which will feature pumpkins and is called Zoo Views: Animals in Autumn: Sun, Oct 27, 2019 8:30AM – 10:30AM. It is my favorite photo class and time of the year. Hope to see you in the fall.

A whirlwind visit last weekend to DC to visit good friends, enjoy the cherry blossoms and get a bit of culture would not be complete without a visit to the National Zoo. Our visit was abbreviated – so we headed straight for mammals. In just two hours we managed to enjoy their three giant pandas, Mei Xiang, Tian Tian and baby Bao Bao. We rushed to the Amazonia area to see the adorable four month old Andean bear cubs Muniri and Mayni with their mother. We waved ‘hi’ to the elephants, seals and orangutans and luckily got a chance to visit the small mammal house with keeper Maria who generously gave her time to us. We fell in love with their sand cat named Thor, their South American porcupines and an adorable naked mole rat (featured above). A shout out to my friend Nick, Ashley and Maria for making our short visit most memorable. We will be back.
