SifakaWe took a mini-zoocation south to the Philadelphia Zoo on one of the coldest days of the season.  We essentially had the entire zoo to ourselves. It was a great day filled with wonderfully active animals and we caught sight of our first Prehensile-tailed  porcupine baby, called a porcupette.  Check out the video below today’s montage. If you subscribe to my weekly photos (and get them in your in-box) you are probably not able to view my videos from your inbox image.  Just scroll up and click on the blue link (which is the name of today’s send) and it will take you back to my ‘While at the Zoo’ website where you can watch today’s video selection and see the adorable porcupette and it’s parents.

ZEBRA-BUTTSIt has been a great year for new faces, places and spaces.  Thank you for coming along for the ride. For those that are looking for exciting zoo photo outings, on Saturday, February 2nd (Groundhog Day) I will be running a Winter Photo Adventure for adults and children at the Central Park Zoo. We will go on a family scavenger hunt in the zoo using our cameras.  Ticket price includes 1 child and 1 adult. (Ages 6-18 with adult.)  Sign up here – it is listed under ‘family programs.’  For those that want to plan ahead we also have a photo adventure on April 14th and April 28th.  Check it out at the same site linked above.

In my eighth end of the year tradition, I bring you my closing photo montage and also take a look back at the new places that we have visited.  Keeping up with tradition, I end the year with no ‘ifs,’ – just ends and butts.  Looking forward to more zoocations in 2013.  Wishing you all a very Happy Zoo Year!

Geoffroy TwinsGrowing up in Brooklyn, the Prospect Park Zoo was my first zoo and will always have a special place in my heart.  I hope you enjoy this week’s visit to Brooklyn where I feature an adorable new male calf, twin Geoffroy Tamarin babies, a red-eyed tree frog, dingo, red panda and much more.  Enjoy all of these fabulous faces and a very special Hanukkah greeting to one and all from my house to your house. If you subscribe to my weekly photos (and get them in your in-box) you are probably not able to view my videos directly from your inbox.  Just scroll up and click on the Blue link (which is the name of today’s send) and it will take you back to my ‘While at the Zoo’ website where you can watch today’s video selection from Marley the Hanukkah singing dog. Marley is very talented. I have not been able to teach my dog Benny how to sing but he is excellent at striking a pose as soon as I approach him with my camera. Hanukkah

We took a drive up to the Litchfield CT to visit a good friend who now works at the Livingston Ripley Waterfowl Conservancy.  All I can say is ‘wow.’  The place is beautiful, pristine and the added vista of the turning leaves made the trip even more special. Swans geese, cranes and ducks as far as the eye can see. It is a not for profit facility dedicated to the conservation and preservation of waterfowl. The Conservancy is open to the public on Fridays and Sundays.  A special shout out to Chuck and Ian for making our visit so memorable.

For the fourth time in so many years I traveled to Jackson, New Jersey with friends to experience the fun of the Six Flags Wild Safari adventure. The first time I visited Six Flags we drove our own car and had a blast.  Since that time I have dipped into the Lobo piggy bank to experience their VIP private ‘off road’ adventure.  I have loved it each time.  Sorry to say they are renovating their entire park for the 2013 season.  I am sure it will be fun – but I will cherish all of the good times we had in our private tours these past years. If you want to see what they are up to in the coming year, click on this link and watch the video.

Check out the woman’s expression in the first photo of today’s montage.  I imagine she is thinking how she will explain this event to her insurance agent.  If you are wondering – it all ended fine and she (and we) shared a hearty laugh over the entire rhino traffic jam situation.

Finally, it is now officially fall and registration is open for my Central Park Zoo Fall Photography workshop.  The workshop is Sunday, November 11th from 9:00AM-11:00AM.  This class fills up quickly. Click on this Central Park Zoo link,  read all about the workshop and sign up for some guaranteed photo fun. There are many programs and classes for all ages.  Check them all out and plan for a fun fall and winter zoo experience.

This video bear and giraffe encounter was taken on a visit in 2010.

An annual rite of summer’s passage includes a visit to good friends in Massachusetts and a return visit to the Southwick’s Zoo in Mendon, MA.  I call it our mini-zoocation. Southwick’s always has something new.  This visit included two adorable five month old playful warthogs, a young Ankole calf (aka Watusi), baby pot-bellied pigs and much more. If you subscribe to my weekly photos (and get them in your in-box) you are probably not able to view my videos from your inbox image.  Just scroll up and click on the Blue link (which is the name of today’s send) and it will take you back to my ‘While at the Zoo’ website where you can watch today’s video selection – the baby warthogs playing. Enjoy the fun.

The Queens Zoo has a beautiful two month old Texas Longhorn calf living on the farm.  The male calf, born on May 26th weighed 60 pounds at birth.  The zoo also has an active Canadian Lynx, very busy thick-billed parrot habitat, an exciting aviary, bison, pronghorns, coyotes, pumas and more.

The 8th and final zoo on our zoocation, was The Buffalo Zoo – and what a  zoo it is.  There were surprises around every corner.  It seems that sometimes a zoo map does not reveal all that there is to see. Not only did we see meerkat babies, we saw a tiny wallaby joey still in the pouch, agouti babies, a snow monkey baby, boat-billed heron chicks, and more.  Their tropical rainforest is sensational (complete with occasional rain) and to add icing to an already delicious cake, a former Central Park Zookeeper now works at the Buffalo Zoo and we were able get some memorable behind the scenes access. Thanks Shanna!

Speaking of zookeepers, today is the start of Zookeeper Appreciation Week.  If you happen to visit a zoo this week, why not tell a zookeeper how much you appreciate what they do – I know I will.

So this photo montage completes our 2012 summer zoocation. Does anyone have a favorite zoo they would like to tell me about?  Maybe my zoo buddy and I can start planning a zoocation from one of your suggestions (assuming we haven’t already visited).  She tells me we have been to 78 unique zoos together since we started this whole thing about five years ago.

Zoo #5 on our summer zoocation was the Seneca Park  Zoo Rochester NY. Their new ‘A Step Into Africa’ habitat was great for both photographers and non-camera carrying visitors alike. It is great to see chain-link fencing becoming a thing of the past. Even though it was a hot, hot day most of the animals were active and engaging.  It is always best to visit a zoo at the beginning or end of the day.

Zoo #4 on our summer zoocation was the Rosamond Gifford Zoo at Burnet Park, Syracuse, New York. We met some new zoo friends who generously shared some of their time with behind the scenes activities for us.  The collection of animals was great, especially the delightful spectacled bear brothers and young penguins. Enjoy!
