We headed south for a day trip to the Philadelphia Zoo this week. Other than the enormous crowds (who knew it would be crowded on a Tuesday)? – we had a fun visit. Many additions and upgrades were noted, including the repurposed polar bear exhibit which is now inhabited by penguins. Also we noticed many more bird habitats, tree top trails and food options. The Philadelphia Zoo is always a fun visit.

Remember the Super Bowl? About six weeks ago, right before my shoulder surgery, we drove south to Philadelphia the day before their Super Bowl victory parade. The Philadelphia Zoo was all decked out in green and white ‘go eagles’ banners and while the crowd was sparse (it was a bitter cold day) everyone was jubilant over their victory.

The Philadelphia Zoo is one of my favorite zoos. I love their collection of amazing animals many of whom you can see playing and running or just sitting above your head in their Tree Top Trails and Zoo 360 animal exploration trails. It is a concept that is enriching for both the animals and the visitor. A special shout out to friends Sheila and Jerry (and Tony the rhino) who made this visit even more memorable.

A midweek trip south to the Philadelphia Zoo was well worth the two hour drive. We had the zoo mostly to ourselves and all of the animals were awake and active. The Philadelphia Zoo never disappoints.

The occasional Friday road trip gang piled into a car this week and visited the Philadelphia Zoo. Their four little lion cubs were the big draw for me and the Philadelphia Zoo never disappoints. Their tree-top trail theme has expanded to include larger primates and now the big cats also have access to this great enrichment. There is nothing quite as thrilling looking up to see a gorgeous tiger overhead, licking his chops. They are in the process of building an overhead trail for the gorillas too. We will be back.

Three fun-filled days in Philadelphia this week combined art, history and of course, the Philadelphia Zoo. The weather was perfect and the zoo never disappoints. This visit introduced us to their adorable five month old snow leopard cubs and their recently completed outdoor treetop trail and great ape trail. The new KidsZoo looked like lots of fun. An easy day trip if you are coming from the NYC area. I encourage you to visit.

We took a mini-zoocation south to the Philadelphia Zoo on one of the coldest days of the season. We essentially had the entire zoo to ourselves. It was a great day filled with wonderfully active animals and we caught sight of our first Prehensile-tailed porcupine baby, called a porcupette. Check out the video below today’s montage. My zoocation pal, Mary Schwalm, drove down to NYC for a very busy local mini-zoocation. One of our journeys took us to the Philadelphia Zoo. We got to see their year old gibbon baby, 10 month old snow leopard cubs, new female lion and fast growing jaguar cub (that we saw last October) as well as a two month old adorable sifaka baby. Enjoy the photos and my video of the breeding Victoria Crowned Pigeons that were seen at the McNeil Avian Center.
