We are lucky New Yorkers as we now have another Museum dedicating an exhibition to the celebration of the New Yorker magazine’s 100th anniversary. The AKC Museum of the Dog is now exhibiting a private collection of 44 covers of The New Yorker related to dogs. The collection spans nearly the entire run of the magazine with covers featuring the work of New Yorker notables such as Peter Arno, James Thurber, Charles Addams, and Mark Ulriksen.The exhibition includes commentary on the specific covers with additional background material supplied by the staff and archives of The New Yorker. In addition to the role of dogs in the City, other themes include dog shows, grooming, country life and sports. There is also be a section of covers produced around the Westminster Kennel Club’s annual dog show. This is a fun exhibit (as is the whole museum) and will be running thru December 7th. Woof!

Top o’ the morning to all. There are nine Native Dogs of Ireland. Two Hounds – Irish Wolfhound and Kerry Beagle, three Gun dogs – Irish Water Spaniel, Irish Red Setter and Irish Red & White Setter, four Terriers – Irish Terrier, Irish Glen of Imaal Terrier, Irish Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier and Kerry Blue Terrier. The Museum of the Dog featured these nine breeds in their latest exhibit. It is on through March 30th. There are also cats with Irish roots. Namely the Manx cat as well as the Cymric cat. Both of these cat types have very short to entirely absent tails as a mutation to the usual cat body structure. The Cymric cat is the long haired variety of the Manx. Today’s photo montage features all of these splendid breeds. You might notice that I took the liberty of including some of my own cherished pets in all their Irish splendor. The bottom photo is a feature of the Museum of the Dog. There’s a booth where you snap your photo and the Museum pairs you up with your dog match. This visit I was matched with a Maltese who is part of the ’toy group’ and is gentle, playful and charming. Perfect!

Truth be told, the title photo is not of one of the designer doggies in the current exhibit at the Museum of the Dog. It is my handsome little guy, Mr. Pepe. I thought he was classy enough to be in this fun exhibit – so I added him to today’s photo montage.The pop-up display, Canine Couture: An Exhibition of Anthony Rubio Designs, showcases the dog fashion that debuted at this year’s Pet Gala on May 20, 2024. Inspired by the hottest designs at fashion’s biggest events, Rubio recreates the looks taking them from outfits for humans to fashions for our four-legged friends. This exhibit is only thru July 7, 2024. Woof!

The Museum of the Dog has a fun new exhibit thru April. ‘Outfoxed‘ features Fox Terriers, both Smooth and Wire who have been among the most popular and versatile breeds; whether on the hunt with the hounds, in the field chasing rabbits, in the barn ratting or, these days, as a delightfully upbeat companion dog. While I am not a fan of hunts, I am a fan of this dog museum. ‘The exhibition Outfoxed: Fox Terriers and Friends explores the development of the breed, the variety of their jobs, and chronicles the many champions in the collection. The list of famous Fox Terriers in the show reads like a who’s-who in the history of the breed. Visitors will encounter portrayals of such notables including: Belgrave Joe, one of the early fathers of the breed, Cackler of Notts, the Duchess of Newcastle’s masterpiece, Caesar, Cackler’s son and Edward VII’s beloved companion, The Totteridge XI, Francis Redmond’s kennel as painted by Arthur Wardle and Maude Earl and Nornay Saddler, considered by many as close to perfection in the breed’. My own little Chihuahua, Mr. Pepe, bears no regal markings but as far as I am concerned he is Best in Show.

The Museum of the Dog always has something interesting to see. Identity Restraint & the Art of the Dog Collar did not disappoint (although some of the collars were pretty scary.) Held in conjunction with the National Sporting Library and Museum in Middleburg, VA the exhibition brings together over 60 collars from the NSLM’s collection and 50 artworks belonging to the American Kennel Club and the AKC Museum of the Dog. The combination of the collars and artworks illustrates how they were used and evolved over several centuries. The basic design of the collar has not changed since the time of ancient Mesopotamia but variations on the collar, specifically ornamentation and style, reflect the values of the various world cultures that kept dogs. These subtle, and sometimes not so subtle, alterations to the central design can be quite telling in the role dogs played and how they were regarded in different time periods and cultures. Who’s a good boy?

The AKC’s Dog Museum has a new exhibit about the amazingly powerful dogs of war. The exhibit runs through July 19, 2022. This exhibit features ten life-sized, carved-wood allegorical memorials by sculptor James Mellick on display from his “Wounded Warrior Dogs” and “Over the Rainbow Bridge” collections, along with the museum’s permanent collection, which includes sculptures, paintings, collars, vests, photographs and more. This exhibit is a heart breaker and definitely makes you think. War is hell. These incredible dogs are heroes.

Yesterday was a very hard day to relive as we honored those we lost 20 years ago on 9/11. We all remember that day – where we were – who we were with – and how we coped with the days, weeks and months that followed. I coped by blogging about the smells, the sounds and the sights that I witnessed. Some of you have been following my musings, photos and rants for about 20 years. I decided to return to the Museum of the Dog this week to see their new exhibit about some of the rescue dogs of 9/11. When the World Trade Center collapsed on September 11, 2001, nearly 10,000 emergency rescue workers joined in the efforts to help. More than 300 of those heroes were dogs. This article from the Doggington Post highlights a few of them. I spent a little time going over some of my posts from that time and thought I would share one of those posts from the 10th anniversary of 9/11. If you have a lot of time on your hands and want to go back in time I share my random and oft times funny musings here. My post from 2011 on the opening of the Memorial site is here. Going to the Dogs August 1, 2021

The American Kennel Club was founded in 1884 and is a registry of purebred dog pedigrees in the United States. I have never had a pure bred dog but I loved them all – regardless of lack of pedigree. Since August is now National Dog month I decided to finally visit the Museum of the Dog and devote today’s photo montage to dogs. I started to think about all of the wonderful dogs that have been in my life and added those long gone cuties (and some very old photos) into today’s montage as well. Here’s to my dogs Lois, Donald (their five puppies), Benny, One-eyed Jack and of course now, Mr. Pepe who have made my life so much happier through the years. They also have a ‘find your match’ game at the Dog Museum where your photo is taken and they come up with a dog that ‘matches’ you. Bottom photo in this montage is what I discovered as my ‘match.’ A Rat Terrier apparently is ‘friendly, inquisitive and lovable.’ Not sure that is a perfect description of me…but I will take it. Give your dog extra kisses this while month please. Woof!
