A recent visit to New England to see good friends brought us to the nearby Stone Zoo. A wonderful zoo surprise was seeing a five day old colobus monkey clinging to its mother. The donations to the Binky Foundation in Benny the dog’s memory keep on coming. Thanking you all so much for remembering my sweet little guy in this way.

We took a mini-zoocation to South Bend, Indiana this week, to visit good friend and now General Curator at the Potawatomi Zoo, Josh Sisk. What a fun and eye opening visit. This 23 acre facility is beautiful – with a varied and interesting collection. The sight lines are wonderful and the habitats are large and very user friendly to the visitor. They have eight species of primates, four species of big cats, Sichuan takin, red panda, river otters, anteater and on and on. There was something new and fascinating around every corner. I was especially enamored with the Amur leopard and her three, six month old cubs. Thank you Josh for your generosity and time. We loved our visit and will be back for sure.

At the suggestion of a good friend we stopped at the Edwin B Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge on the way home from the Cape May County Zoo. And what a treat it was. It is an eight mile drive thru around 47,000 acres of NJ coastal habitat and is an important link in the seasonal bird migration. I am not a birder but my friend was doing the best he could to point out what we were seeing. All I can say is ‘Osprey.’ Coincidentally there is an article in today’s NY Times about Ospreys.

A good way to catch up with an old friend is to take a long drive. And so we did – all the way south to the Cape May County Park and Zoo. The zoo covers about 85 acres of habitats and is free – yes, free. This is my third visit to the zoo and it did not disappoint. We did not see any snow leopard cubs as we did in 2013 but we did see active ocelots, lions, tigers and cheetahs along with beautiful large savannah area. The zoo is open year round and I imagine it is delightful in all seasons. And yes, my old friend and I are all caught up.
A reminder that we are running two photo classes at the Central Park Zoo and registration in now open. Do I hear pumpkins?

The final stop on our 2015 all Texas Zoocation was the all encompassing Moody Gardens in Galveston Texas.
The facility features three main pyramid attractions: the Aquarium Pyramid, which is immense and beautiful and holds many species of fish and four species of penguins; the amazing Rainforest Pyramid, which contains abundant tropical plants, animals, birds, butterflies, reptiles, and a variety of other rainforest animals including free-roaming monkeys and two-toed sloths; and the Discovery Pyramid, which focuses on science-oriented exhibits and activities.
A special shout out to Paula Kolvig and Donitta Brannon for hosting us and showing us every wonderful thing there was to see. Starting to plan Zoocation 2016 – stay tuned.

Along with an incredible bird collection, state of the art gorilla exhibit, large elephant habitat, there are surprises around every corner. Zoo #4 on our Texas ZooCation 2015, was the wonderful San Antonio Zoo. It is a big zoo with a sense of adventure. You weave in and out and come across marvelous surprises around every corner. The Cameron Park Zoo in Waco, Texas was the third stop on our Texas Zoocation. Occasionally we get to meet old animal friends on zoocation. The Cameron Park Zoo brought us a surprise meeting with Kai, their very handsome young male lion (Kai’s photo is in the second row). Kai’s mother, Moxie, was born at the Bronx Zoo in 2009 and then left for Hawaii where she gave birth to Kai in 2012. Check out Moxie’s montage from 2009 .
The zoo had all of the big animals one could want to see plus lot of smaller fun habitats. A special shout out to Manda Butler for her generosity of time and special fun activities for us.

My usual Sunday photo montages were interrupted by some health stuff – but I am am back and am happy to continue sharing photos from our recent Texas zoocation. The Caldwell Zoo in Tyler Texas was the second stop on ZooCation 2015. I thought this zoo was near perfect. It had a terrific layout, great big collection of animals, and amazing sight lines (especially the views through the savannah). We were fortunate to be at the zoo on one of their enrichment days. We could hardly keep up with all of the wonderful enrichment treats that were given to the animals. The staff was warm and friendly and made our visit very special. Huge and lous shout outs to Scotty, Joanna and Amanda for enriching our visit.

Zoocation 2015 began with our east coast 5AM flights to Dallas – first stop the Dallas Zoo. We arrived just in time to join the media frenzy for the debut of little Kipenzi the Giraffe. We met some wonderful warm people and got to see a few special things including an up-close visit with their cheetah and companion dog. I must admit my favorite thing was seeing MJ the adorable Tamandua who was born at the Staten Island Zoo living in his new home. He is the darling of their education tractable program. A shout out to Janelle, Harrison and Allison for a super visit.
