Zoo # 2 on our New England mini-zoocation was Providence, Rhode Island’s Roger Williams Park Zoo. It has been a very long time since I had been to this zoo. It was the zoo of my RISD college days, where as young, art student, I would go to draw their amazing animals. Much has changed and it was fun to be back. They have a fabulous Jack-O-Lantern spectacular each year and we were lucky to be able to get to see it. A special shout out to PJ Jones, Animal Care Manager and Director Jeremy Goodman, DVM for taking such good care of us.rogerwilliams

For those that missed last week’s While at the Zoo I have a good excuse. I was in New England on my annual mini-zoocation to visit great friends, a few zoos and see those gorgeous New England fall leaves. Two out of three ain’t bad. The leaves were past peak but the zoos were terrific as was seeing my friends. Happy NYC Marathon to all (especially my three friends who are participating – go Alison, Tara and Lionel).southwicks2016

Our whirlwind visit to Michigan, Indiana and Ohio winds up at the Toledo Zoo where several of my good friends now work. It is always fun to visit this terrific zoo, share new adventures and see an amazing collection. This has been a great end of summer mini-zoocation.tzoo

This was my third visit to the Potawatomi Zoo in just 17 months. My good friend Josh Sisk was the General Curator during this time. How could I resist visiting him and watching his curatorial creativity come to life at this beautiful 23 acre space in South Bend, Indiana? Josh is now headed to a new adventure in Los Angeles and the plan was conceived to visit him one last time combined with a fun reunion with the gang from Toledo and East Lansing. The lure of seeing three week old Amur leopard cubs was the icing on the cake. See you soon, Josh.POTAREUNION

Last week’s whirlwind trip to Michigan, Ohio and Indiana was lots of fun. Meeting up with good friends and seeing some new sights made for a perfect long weekend. The Detroit Zoo‘s new Polk Penguin Conservation Center is a 33,000-square-foot facility with a 326,000-gallon, 25-foot-deep aquatic area where you can watch more than 80 penguins (King, Gentoo, Rockhopper and Macaroni) explore their habitat. The cool temperatures inside the habitat made for a great visit on a hot summer’s day.POLKPENGUIN

It has been way too long since I visited the Queens Zoo. The zoo has a very interesting history dating back to 1968.  This 13 acre facility has a collection that represents animals from the Americas. One of my favorite spots is the aviary which was the Buckminster Fuller-designed geodesic dome that served as the Winston Churchill Pavilion during the 1964-65 World’s Fair. Go visit – it’s fun.QZ2016

Washington is a great place to visit and no visit is complete without dropping by the Smithsonian’s National Zoo. The grounds open at 8AM and getting there early is a good idea. We were able to spend quality time admiring their four giant pandas – Tian Tian (male, age 19), Mei Xiang (female, age 18), Bao Bao (female, almost 3) and little Bei Bei (male, almost one year old). We learned their orangutan is pregnant and due in the fall and we missed the birth of their first sea lion pup in 32 years by only one day (darn it). It was a fun visit and a hearty shout out to Keeper Ashton for spending a generous amount of time with us.  We will be back.NATZOO6.16

The penultimate zoo on our Colorado/Utah Zoocation 2016 was the beautiful 42 acre Hogle Zoo located in Salt Lake City. A special highlight was being able to see their three adorable lion cubs born on February 27, 2016. A shout out to Director Craig Dinsmore, Asst. Director Christina Castellano and Creative Services Director Jay Weston for our pre-opening tour. A delightful zoo in an amazing setting.HOGLEZOO
