We took a mid-week trip to DC and due to a teeny weeny snowfall the city was shut down for an entire day. So we visited the following day and even though there was very little snowfall the visit was well worth our time. Who doesn’t love a giant panda in the snow?

We took a quick trip to Washington, DC and visited the Smithsonian’s National Zoo. We spent lots of time admiring their newest arrival, two week old western lowland gorilla baby, Moke and his mother, Calaya. We were also charmed by their orangutan toddler, Redd, the giant pandas, clouded leopard, small clawed otters and of course, their new male elephant, Spike. Go visit – it is free (thanks to your taxes).

Washington is a great place to visit and no visit is complete without dropping by the Smithsonian’s National Zoo. The grounds open at 8AM and getting there early is a good idea. We were able to spend quality time admiring their four giant pandas – Tian Tian (male, age 19), Mei Xiang (female, age 18), Bao Bao (female, almost 3) and little Bei Bei (male, almost one year old). We learned their orangutan is pregnant and due in the fall and we missed the birth of their first sea lion pup in 32 years by only one day (darn it). It was a fun visit and a hearty shout out to Keeper Ashton for spending a generous amount of time with us. We will be back.
