While in New England to attend a dear friend’s wedding this weekend, in addition to the festivities, we, of course, had to make time to go to the Franklin Park Zoo to see their sweet 18 month old baby gorilla and meet their adorable 18 day old baby ring-tailed lemur. Nebuchadrezzer, gave birth on March 19 inside Franklin Park Zoo’s Tropical Forest. Franklin Park Zoo has eight lemurs, including the new baby. My zoocation pal, Mary Schwalm, drove down to NYC for a very busy local mini-zoocation. One of our journeys took us to the Philadelphia Zoo. We got to see their year old gibbon baby, 10 month old snow leopard cubs, new female lion and fast growing jaguar cub (that we saw last October) as well as a two month old adorable sifaka baby. Enjoy the photos and my video of the breeding Victoria Crowned Pigeons that were seen at the McNeil Avian Center. Spring at the Central Park Zoo is terrific. Come visit us and meet our four new Rockhopper Penguins, who join the other three species, the Gentoo, Chinstrap and King penguins. We also have an adorable baby lamb and a beautiful new goat. Our large waterfowl collection all look beautiful and are fun to watch as they display to one another. There’s also lots of nest building to watch in the Tropical Aviary.
If you like my photos and enjoy taking pictures yourself, why not come to the zoo for one of my photo workshops this spring? There are still a few spots left in each workshop. The three workshops are highlighted below. You can read all about them and sign up on line here.
– On April14th (8:30 to 11:30) we are repeating our popular Breakfast With the Birds adult class where you will have the chance to hear all about our amazing collection and then are able to photograph the birds during morning census. The class finishes up at the Apple store for a fabulous editing tutorial from the techies at Apple.
– We also have a family program scheduled for Earth Day (Sunday, April 22nd from 10:00 to 11:30) and is geared to adults and kids (ages 6 to 18). Share the joy of wildlife and photography with the family. It will be fun and you can take the memories home through your photos.
– And finally, a new workshop called Urban Birds of Prey on Sunday May 20th (9:00 to 11:00) where you will meet some of our raptor ambassadors up-close and personal. This will afford you great opportunities to photograph and learn about these beautiful birds. Looking forward to seeing some of you soon at the Zoo.

Here is the final stop on our zoo-cation to the Tampa area. The Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary is located on the ocean in Indian Shores, Florida. ‘The sanctuary is the largest wild bird hospital in the U.S. based on the admission of over 8,000 injured birds each year. It is set up to immediately triage, stabilize, and administer fluids to malnourished or injured birds’. We were lucky to see a Brown Pelican chick that was only two hours old. Enjoy the photos and watch the video of the chick. (If you subscribe to my weekly Sunday photos (and get them in your in-box) you are probably not able to view my videos from your inbox image. Homosassa Springs Florida has a fine wildlife park. ‘Visitors can see West Indian manatees every day of the year from the park’s underwater observatory in the main spring. The park showcases native Florida wildlife, including manatees, black bears, bobcats, white-tailed deer, American alligators, American crocodiles, and river otters’.

Tampa’s Florida Aquarium was delightful. While there you can also take a 90 minute boat excursion out into Tampa Bay and see some of their 500 wild Bottle-nosed Dolphins and some amazing diving Brown Pelicans.

Our recent trip to Tampa was filled with terrific images. Busch Gardens was great. There were many memorable moments, but I have to say I loved the cheetahs most. Enjoy my short videos of their daily Flamingo Walk and their delightful new Meerkat babies.

We just wound up a sensational four day zoo-cation in Tampa. It is fun to visit new places and spaces. The weather was warm and sunny, but very humid. Not good for my hair, but good for everything else. Here is the first of five photo montages – the www.lowryparkzoo.com. Enjoy!
