A branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Cloisters is located in beautiful Fort Tryon Park, overlooking the Hudson River. The museum and gardens are devoted to the art of medieval Europe. I love this place.  It is a quick trip on the A train and a lovely walk through the park.  On your way to the Cloisters, do not forget to stop and have a fabulous lunch at the New Leaf Cafe.  The cafe is a part of Bette Midler’s NYRP which is a non-profit organization dedicated to transforming open space in underserved communities to create a greener, more sustainable New York City. In partnership with the City of New York, NYRP is also leading MillionTreesNYC – an initiative to plant and care for one million new trees throughout New York City’s five boroughs by 2017.  All proceeds from the New Leaf Cafe support New York Restoration Project’s mission of turning forgotten spaces into growing places.

Regardless of your opinion about explorer Christopher Columbus, this public art installation  at Columbus Circle is interesting and thought provoking. Japanese artist Tatzu Nishi continues his oeuvre of transforming statues, monuments and architectural details.  We get an intimate perspective of the statue, fabulous views and a six story walk up for exercise. You have until November 18th to check it out.  It is free and worth your time.

While visiting family in California this week we enjoyed an adventure at Safari West in Santa Rosa, CA.  This AZA facility located on 400 gorgeous acres is fun for all.  We toured in a terrific open vehicle while we oohed and aahed all of the wildlife in very close proximity.  I highly recommend this place if you are in the area.

Only three weeks to go until my Central Park Zoo Fall Photography workshop, Sunday, November 11th from 9:00AM-11:00AM.  There are a few spaces still available. Click on this Central Park Zoo link, read all about the workshop and sign up for some guaranteed photo fun. I love October complete with it’s feast for the palette and the palate. It is filled with beautiful turning leaves, crisp air, blue skies and a cornucopia of color, texture and shapes.  I was able to capture some of this at the union Square Greenmarket over the weekend.  Check out your local farmer’s market to see what is happening in your area.  Bring your camera and have some fun.

Only about a month to go until my Central Park Zoo Fall Photography workshop, Sunday, November 11th from 9:00AM-11:00AM.  This class is filling up quickly. Click on this Central Park Zoo link  read all about the workshop and sign up for some guaranteed photo fun. We took a drive up to the Litchfield CT to visit a good friend who now works at the Livingston Ripley Waterfowl Conservancy.  All I can say is ‘wow.’  The place is beautiful, pristine and the added vista of the turning leaves made the trip even more special. Swans geese, cranes and ducks as far as the eye can see. It is a not for profit facility dedicated to the conservation and preservation of waterfowl. The Conservancy is open to the public on Fridays and Sundays.  A special shout out to Chuck and Ian for making our visit so memorable.

Last Sunday we took a trip to the New York Botanical Garden to see their lovely exhibit Monet’s Garden. It is on through October 21st so you still have time to see it. This tribute to French Impressionist Claude Monet showcases a seasonally changing interpretation of the gardens that inspired his art.  While I enjoyed the recreation of his Giverny bridge inside the Enid Haupt Conservatory I particularly enjoyed the lovely water lilies surrounding the conservatory. For those of you that need an animal photo fix each Sunday, in keeping with today’s flower theme, I have included old shot of Zeppy, the Central Park Zoo‘s former snow monkey with a flower.

For the fourth time in so many years I traveled to Jackson, New Jersey with friends to experience the fun of the Six Flags Wild Safari adventure. The first time I visited Six Flags we drove our own car and had a blast.  Since that time I have dipped into the Lobo piggy bank to experience their VIP private ‘off road’ adventure.  I have loved it each time.  Sorry to say they are renovating their entire park for the 2013 season.  I am sure it will be fun – but I will cherish all of the good times we had in our private tours these past years. If you want to see what they are up to in the coming year, click on this link and watch the video.

Check out the woman’s expression in the first photo of today’s montage.  I imagine she is thinking how she will explain this event to her insurance agent.  If you are wondering – it all ended fine and she (and we) shared a hearty laugh over the entire rhino traffic jam situation.

Finally, it is now officially fall and registration is open for my Central Park Zoo Fall Photography workshop.  The workshop is Sunday, November 11th from 9:00AM-11:00AM.  This class fills up quickly. Click on this Central Park Zoo link,  read all about the workshop and sign up for some guaranteed photo fun. This video bear and giraffe encounter was taken on a visit in 2010.

Recent news that the Bronx Zoo had three tiger cubs sent me traveling north to the Bronx yesterday. Who doesn’t love tiger cubs?  It was well worth the trip. The cubs are adorable.  Other delightful surprises included rock hyrax babies, a whole bunch of dwarf mongoose babies, a young sifaka and brown ruffed lemur and an adorable young sea lion pup.  All in all – a fine Saturday visit.

Don’t forget my Central Park Zoo Fall Photography workshop class has been moved to Sunday, November 11th from 9:00AM-11:00AM. The original date (Sunday, November 4th) conflicted with the NYC Marathon. This class fills up quickly. Click on this Central Park Zoo link,  read all about the workshop and sign up for some guaranteed photo fun. There are programs and classes for all ages.  Check them all out and plan for a fun fall and winter zoo experience.
