Homosassa Springs Florida has a fine wildlife park. ‘Visitors can see West Indian manatees every day of the year from the park’s underwater observatory in the main spring. The park showcases native Florida wildlife, including manatees, black bears, bobcats, white-tailed deer, American alligators, American crocodiles, and river otters’.

Tampa’s Florida Aquarium was delightful.  While there you can also take a 90 minute boat excursion out into Tampa Bay and see some of their 500 wild Bottle-nosed Dolphins and some amazing diving Brown Pelicans.

Our recent trip to Tampa was filled with terrific images.  Busch Gardens was great.  There were many memorable moments, but I have to say I loved the cheetahs most.  Enjoy my short videos of their daily Flamingo Walk and their delightful new Meerkat babies.

If you subscribe to my weekly Sunday photos (and get them in your in-box) you are probably not able to view my videos from your inbox image.  Just scroll up and click on the Blue link (which is the name of today’s send) and it will take you back to my ‘While at the Zoo’ website where you can watch the video selection.

We just wound up a sensational four day zoo-cation in Tampa.  It is fun to visit new places and spaces.  The weather was warm and sunny, but very humid. Not good for my hair, but good for everything else. Here is the first of five photo montages –  the  www.lowryparkzoo.com. Enjoy!

The Central Park Zoo’s  four sea lions – Scooter, April, Katie and Edith sure know how to leap, play, soar and move the crowds.  Here are just a few of their acrobatics.

If you like my photos and enjoy taking pictures yourself, why not come to the zoo for one of my photo workshops this spring? We have scheduled three workshops and you can read all about them and sign up on line here.

– One is a family program scheduled for Earth Day (Sunday, April 22nd from 10:00 to 11:30)) and is geared to adults and kids (ages 6 to 18). Share the joy of wildlife and photography with the family. It will be fun and you can take the memories home through your photos.

– On April14th (8:30 to 11:30) we are repeating our popular Breakfast With the Birds adult class where you will have the chance to hear all about our amazing collection and then are able to photograph the birds during morning census.  The class finishes up at the Apple store for a fabulous editing tutorial from the techies at Apple.

– And finally, a new workshop called Urban Birds of Prey on Sunday May 20th (9:00 to 11:00) where you will meet some of our raptor ambassadors up-close and personal. This will afford you great opportunities to photograph and learn about these beautiful birds. Looking forward to seeing some of you soon at the Zoo.

Zoos are a great place to see pairs of animals. This week’s photo montage is devoted to pairings of all sorts.  Happy Valentine’s Day to all and enjoy the video below that cracked me up. For those that are not familiar with my little dog, that is Benny above – looking as cute as he possibly can be.

Splish splash they were takin’ a bath! The Central Park Zoo has a fabulous collection of waterfowl.  But they are not the only ones that enjoy splish splashing at the zoo.  Come visit!

My zoo-cation pal, Mary Schwalm has been in Indianapolis all week working for her newspaper, the Eagle Tribune, in North Andover, MA.  She went to the Indianapolis Zoo to see if their residents had an opinion on today’s Super Bowl.  She rigged it – but it was fun to watch.  Go Giants!

Yellowstone’s Winter Landscape January 29, 2012

Here is Part Two of my photo homage/montage to Yellowstone National Park in winter. I am drawn to open spaces when I travel.  Living in the vertical world of NYC, where canyons and bits and pieces of the sky are the usual order of the day it is quite a contrast to travel where the landscape goes on and on. You will notice that some of my favorite photos are largely horizontal.  The snow creates pillows and curves in amazing vistas.

I would venture to say seeing a ‘sun dog’ in the morning sky was special (bottom photo).  I had never seen an icy rainbow image surrounding the sun and it was memorable. The grayness of the winter sky cast deep shadows and surprising sparkles galore. Needless to say, the geologic mystery housed in Yellowstone is beauty to both the eye and the ear. Enjoy several seconds of both sound and light as Old Faithful and the Grand Geyser burst in the winter morning.

Yellowstone National Park is spectacular anytime of the year but especially stunning in the winter. The crowds are gone and the wildlife and landscape are a snowy sensation.  Here is Part One of my photo montage/homage to Yellowstone’s winter wildlife.  For reference, the photos include the ever present bison (who have the right of way on the roads), pronghorn, big horn sheep, Barrow’s goldeneye ducks, a Dipper bird, Trumpeter swans and elk.
