We had three days of snow in NYC this week. I am lucky. I do not have to shovel or drive in the snow. I am a mass transit kind of gal. I get to reap the rewards of freshly fallen snow photographing beautiful animals enjoying it as much as I do. That said, I salute the zookeepers, managers and maintenance department for working so hard to get our zoo open at 10AM so that the public can enjoy a beautiful, safe space. My good friend and zoocation buddy Mary Schwalm has created another sensational 2018 Calendar. They are $10 each and are great for the office party and gift exchanges. CD sized calendar are perfect for a desk. Send an email at maryschwalm@gmail.com and get your order shipping by Monday. I got mine in the mail and love them. (See example below today’s photo montage).

The term ‘sitting ducks’ is usually not taken literally – but here you go. For those that ask me to identify my photos the following ducks are featured today. Chinese Mandarins, Spectacled and Common Eiders, Red-breasted Mergansers, Harlequins, Marbled Teal, White-headed, Pink-eared, Falcated, Philippine, Ruddy shelducks, Long-tailed, Scaly sided Mergansers, Pygmy geese (really ducks) and Baer’s Pochard. All of these photos were taken at the Central Park Zoo and the mature ducks can be seen today at the Zoo.
Central Park Zoo – Happy 29th! August 6, 2017

This Tuesday (8.8.17) will be the 29th anniversary of the Central Park Zoo (in its present form). I am happy to say I have been involved with the zoo for the past 28 of those 29 years. The zoo began in the 1860s as a menagerie. The 1905 postcard above depicts the menagerie with the Arsenal (built in 1848 – which now houses our WCS administrative offices and the NYC Parks Dept). The zoo was modified in 1934 as part of the WPA with the addition of many new buildings arranged in a quadrangle around the sea lion pool. In a contract with NYC, the zoo was completely renovated in the mid-1980s and with much fanfare, reopened on August 8th, 1988, replacing the old-fashioned cages with naturalistic environments. There are many great old photos of the menagerie and zoo with a simple google search. Happy Anniversary!

The third week in July is National Zookeeper Week. I appreciate these terrific people all year long and dedicate this week’s photo montage to the 18 Zookeepers who make everything hum at my home base, the Central Park Zoo. I thank you, one and all, for all you do – the unsung heroes – each and every day. We are open 365 days a year, thru rain, snow, summer heat and all holidays. National Zookeeper Week just started, how about if you go to a zoo this week tell a zookeeper how much they are appreciated?

Winter gave us one last gasp of cold, wind and snow this week. The animals at the Central Park Zoo did not mind at all. Come visit before it all melts away.

In anticipation of this week’s St Patrick’s Day celebrations I thought gathering photos of ‘green’ animals might be fun. All of today’s photos are from the Central Park Zoo except for the bottom photo which is of green iguanas at the Prospect Park Zoo. And speaking of green animals, Kermit said it best: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpiIWMWWVco

All WCS zoos were closed on February 9th during the snowstorm. I was at the zoo bright and early the next day to catch our amazing collection as they emerged from their holding areas to see the freshly fallen snow. What fun.
