It has been a great year for new faces, places and spaces. Thank you for coming along for the ride. I love the holidays (actually any holiday that warrants the wearing of a hat for Benny and the cats). This year’s making of my annual holiday card was lots of fun (for all involved). Along with the final product, I thought you might enjoy seeing some of the photos that did not make the cut for this year’s card. A special shout out to Benny the dog, Madison the elder cat and the ever delightful one year olds, Audrey and Roberta. And a very happy holiday season to all of you. Salud!

‘Tis the season for gift giving and one of the great things about zoos is that gifts are in abundance and they keep on giving all year long. Today’s montage is devoted to some of the 2014 gifts at the Central Park Zoo. Included are two adorable, recently arrived, juvenile harbor seals, two sunbittens, a Victorian crowned-pigeon, leaf-tailed geckos, red-crested turaco chicks, Papaya the sheep, a white-naped crane chick, poison dart frogs, oodles of endangered duckings and of course, Malala, the snow leopard cub. Stay tuned to meet Betty and Veronica, two grizzly bears who will be making their debut soon. Come visit the zoo and give yourself a gift.

Winter is the best time to visit snow leopards at the Central Park Zoo. Come meet Zoe and her six month old cub, Malala in one habitat and daddy Askai in another. If you are in Bryant Park this winter, check out the Celsius Bar and Restaurant, which has great views of the skating rink, tree and shops. The Celsius Bar also features Snow Leopard Vodka along with four of my huge photos of the Central Park Zoo’s snow leopards on display thru March 1st. Very very cool indeed. The four California sea lions who live at the Central Park Zoo never cease to amaze. They flip, flap, flop and fly across the pool and into the air. Come watch April, Katie, Edith, little Charlie and of course their dazzling zookeepers daily during their feed and demonstration at 11:30, 1:30 and 3:30 each day.

Philadelphia Zoo – Fall 2014 November 9, 2014

The occasional Friday road trip gang piled into a car this week and visited the Philadelphia Zoo. Their four little lion cubs were the big draw for me and the Philadelphia Zoo never disappoints. Their tree-top trail theme has expanded to include larger primates and now the big cats also have access to this great enrichment. There is nothing quite as thrilling looking up to see a gorgeous tiger overhead, licking his chops. They are in the process of building an overhead trail for the gorillas too. We will be back.

The Stone Zoo – Fall 2014 November 2, 2014

Last month’s min-zoocation in New England finished up at the always fun Stone Zoo in Stoneham MA where we got to see adorable Lynx cubs, two Colobus babies and a gorgeous new wolf troop.
There are still a few spaces left in next Saturday’s photo workshop (November 8th, from 8:30 to 10:30) at the Central Park Zoo. We won’t be having a pumpkin fest but we will be doing other fun things. Sign up here and enjoy lots of photo ops – all before the zoo opens.
While at the Zoo
