Wildlife photography is great fun. We wait and wait and wait for those special moments. Sometimes, if we are lucky, the moment happens when your subject is now looking back at you, while you are looking at them. (Except for the bottom photo that cries out for the caption ‘No more photos!’).

All of today’s photos were shot at the Central Park Zoo.

January seems to be turning into photo montage theme month. I had fun putting together this Mirror Image group of photos. All of the photos were taken at the Central Park Zoo.

It has been a great year for new faces, places and spaces. Thank you for coming along for the ride. For those that are looking for exciting zoo photo outings, on Saturday, February 2nd (Groundhog Day) I will be running a Winter Photo Adventure for adults and children at the Central Park Zoo. We will go on a family scavenger hunt in the zoo using our cameras. Ticket price includes 1 child and 1 adult. (Ages 6-18 with adult.) Sign up here – it is listed under ‘family programs.’ For those that want to plan ahead we also have a photo adventure on April 14th and April 28th. Check it out at the same site linked above.
In my eighth end of the year tradition, I bring you my closing photo montage and also take a look back at the new places that we have visited. Keeping up with tradition, I end the year with no ‘ifs,’ – just ends and butts. Looking forward to more zoocations in 2013. Wishing you all a very Happy Zoo Year!

‘Tis better to give than to receive. It is a great adage and we saw it first hand when some of the animals at the Central Park Zoo got surprise food treats this week disguised in festive holiday casing. Check out our snow leopard, snow monkeys, red pandas, Southern coatis, saki monkeys, black and white ruffed lemurs, banded mongoose, muntjac and cotton top tamarins being enriched by our gifts.
The handsome dog above is of course Benny, my oft photographed pooch. A very Happy Holiday season to all of you from the gang at Casa Lobo.

Just scroll up and click on the Blue link (which is the name of today’s send) and it will take you back to my ‘While at the Zoo’ website where you can watch today’s video selection. Enjoy this video I took on December 20th, 2009 when we had a foot of snow fall in the City. Along with the snow our then three year old snow leopard got a holiday gift to play with all day.

Madison Square Park is the park where Benny, my dog, and I spend lots of time. Benny’s time is spent sniffing and dreaming of catching that elusive squirrel and I daydream, reflect, chat with neighbors, other dog walkers, and strangers. Beginning in 1912, Madison Square Park was home to the first public holiday tree in the nation. Considering the special 100th year anniversary Benny and I spent some quality time admiring this year’s tree. If you look closely you can see both of us in the reflections. Madison Square Park was home to the torch of the Statue of Liberty for six years to raise funds for the completion of the statue and its pedestal. There is also a suggestion that the southwest corner of Madison Square Park is where America’s pastime, baseball, got its mid-19th century start.game.. Whatever the history – enjoy today’s reflections.

While on zoo business in the area, we visited the spectacular Niagara Falls. Going off season was a great decision. Niagara Falls is the collective name for three waterfalls that straddle the international border between the Canadian province of Ontario and the U.S. state of New York. Here is a link to some of the wackadoodles who have dared to go over the Falls. My favorite story is from 1911 when the infamous Bobby Leach plunged over the Falls in a steel barrel. Bobby broke both kneecaps and his jaw during his daring event. Years later while touring in New Zealand, Bobby slipped on an orange peel and died from complications due to gangrene. Central Park Zoo business brought us to the corner of New York State and the beautiful Niagara Falls/Buffalo area this week. A return trip to the Buffalo Zoo to visit old WCS zoo friends who now work at the zoo was lots of fun. A special shout out goes to Shanna and Rob. They were generous with their time and it was greatly appreciated. If you recall the Buffalo Zoo was the eighth and final zoo visited on our last zoocation in June. If you are ever in the area I highly recommend visiting this ever growing zoo.

A branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Cloisters is located in beautiful Fort Tryon Park, overlooking the Hudson River. The museum and gardens are devoted to the art of medieval Europe. I love this place. It is a quick trip on the A train and a lovely walk through the park. On your way to the Cloisters, do not forget to stop and have a fabulous lunch at the New Leaf Cafe. The cafe is a part of Bette Midler’s NYRP which is a non-profit organization dedicated to transforming open space in underserved communities to create a greener, more sustainable New York City. In partnership with the City of New York, NYRP is also leading MillionTreesNYC – an initiative to plant and care for one million new trees throughout New York City’s five boroughs by 2017. All proceeds from the New Leaf Cafe support New York Restoration Project’s mission of turning forgotten spaces into growing places.

While visiting family in California this week we enjoyed an adventure at Safari West in Santa Rosa, CA. This AZA facility located on 400 gorgeous acres is fun for all. We toured in a terrific open vehicle while we oohed and aahed all of the wildlife in very close proximity. I highly recommend this place if you are in the area.

I love October complete with it’s feast for the palette and the palate. It is filled with beautiful turning leaves, crisp air, blue skies and a cornucopia of color, texture and shapes. I was able to capture some of this at the union Square Greenmarket over the weekend. Check out your local farmer’s market to see what is happening in your area. Bring your camera and have some fun.
