I thought I would break up the usual animal themed Sunday montage with some delicious and gorgeous looking flowers and vegetables seen at the Union Square Green Market on Friday. I admit to not being a cook and I am a picky eater but I still love color, form and design. Walking around the market with a friend who is a gourmet chef was lots of fun as well. Here’s to your health!

At the suggestion of a good friend we stopped at the Edwin B Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge on the way home from the Cape May County Zoo. And what a treat it was. It is an eight mile drive thru around 47,000 acres of NJ coastal habitat and is an important link in the seasonal bird migration. I am not a birder but my friend was doing the best he could to point out what we were seeing. All I can say is ‘Osprey.’ Coincidentally there is an article in today’s NY Times about Ospreys.

A good way to catch up with an old friend is to take a long drive. And so we did – all the way south to the Cape May County Park and Zoo. The zoo covers about 85 acres of habitats and is free – yes, free. This is my third visit to the zoo and it did not disappoint. We did not see any snow leopard cubs as we did in 2013 but we did see active ocelots, lions, tigers and cheetahs along with beautiful large savannah area. The zoo is open year round and I imagine it is delightful in all seasons. And yes, my old friend and I are all caught up.
A reminder that we are running two photo classes at the Central Park Zoo and registration in now open. Do I hear pumpkins?

I take a lot of photos of zoo animals but take even more shots of my own brood at home. Enjoy a summer zoo photo break with Benny the dog, Madison the elder cat, and sisters Audrey and Roberta who are almost two.

Our recent string of glorious, dry, summer weather has brought big crowds of animal lovers to the Central Park Zoo. Come join the fun and bring your camera. There is so much to photograph. Speaking of cameras, the Central Park Zoo’s Education Programs for fall and winter is now available on the zoo’s website. Two photo workshops are being offered. Check them out here under ‘adult programs.‘ Hope to see you there.

If you missed last night’s sensational light show projected on the Empire State Building here are just a few images that I was able to capture. Illuminating article from the NY Times here.
Yes, the image above is a bit of whimsy added to the light show. It is that famous gorilla climbing up the building.

The lazy hazy crazy days of summer are upon us. It is fun to photograph animals mid-yawning. Enjoy today’s photo montage and try to keep yourself from a yawn.

It is always a treat to introduce friends to the fun at the always terrific Staten Island Zoo. Along with their varied zoo collection, we got to meet up-close and personal, a young beaver doing his first solo swim, Gregory their fennec fox, a tractable African porcupine, the now grown arctic foxes, Ce Ce the charming sloth and the amazing cassowary. Thanks again to Veterinarian and General Curator, Dr. Marc Valitutto for his time and energy. We loved our visit (and will be back).

It has been almost three months since I dedicated a Sunday montage to my home base, the Central Park Zoo. Mea culpa…it’s good to be home. Come visit!

The final stop on our 2015 all Texas Zoocation was the all encompassing Moody Gardens in Galveston Texas.
The facility features three main pyramid attractions: the Aquarium Pyramid, which is immense and beautiful and holds many species of fish and four species of penguins; the amazing Rainforest Pyramid, which contains abundant tropical plants, animals, birds, butterflies, reptiles, and a variety of other rainforest animals including free-roaming monkeys and two-toed sloths; and the Discovery Pyramid, which focuses on science-oriented exhibits and activities.
A special shout out to Paula Kolvig and Donitta Brannon for hosting us and showing us every wonderful thing there was to see. Starting to plan Zoocation 2016 – stay tuned.
