It feels really good to start to feel the warmth of the spring sun on one’s face. The icy cold of winter is fading and we are all feeling the exuberance of spring. Oh – and yes, that is Benny the Dog in all of his Easter splendor.

The Central Park Zoo’s newest residents, grizzly bears Betty and Veronica, have settled in nicely to their new home. After a long cold winter they have truly begun to enjoy their streams, ponds and pools and can be seen bathing throughout the day. Come visit!

As most of you know, on the first day of spring we got four inches of snow in the Big Apple. I thought it was a good time to share some of the last snowy day zoo photos for awhile (I hope).

Nothing like Coney Island on a frigid winter’s day with a visit to Nathan’s (yum) and Brooklyn’s NY Aquarium. The Aquarium is still undergoing construction from the devastation of Hurricane Sandy and the promises of new and exciting exhibits will be happening soon(ish). A huge shout out to Kayla, Martha, the keeper staff and the amazing Nuka the walrus for making us feel so very welcome. We will be back.

It is always a bit sad when zoo friends depart NYC for new adventures elsewhere – but the good news is that I get to visit them wherever they go. So last week’s return to see old friends at the Toledo Zoo was, as always, lots of fun. The zoo always has new things to see. I was partial to see one of their new wolves, named Lobo. Thanks to Jeff, Juan and Chuck for their time and generosity. My visit was great – and I will be back.

As much of the country suffers from the cold it has also been a brutally cold week in the frozen Apple. Last Sunday a bunch of (crazy) wildlife enthusiasts boarded a NY Water Taxi to explore NY harbor and attempt to see the seals and wildlife led by the ever so optimistic Audubon guide. I saw more ice formations than wildlife but it was an adventure never the less. We did not see any seals but you can check out photos from two years ago when we did the same outing and actually saw harbor seals. . There are a few more weeks of these tours if you want to try your luck.
In two weeks, on March 8th, from 8:30 to 10:30 we will be running our popular photo series – Breakfast with the Birds at the Central Park Zoo. The class will be held in the warmth of the Tropic Zone. Our Collections Manager is running the class and will share some fun stories about our individual birds and relationships. Bring your cameras and get some tips about photographing birds from me. It is always a treat to introduce friends to the fun at the always terrific Staten Island Zoo. Along with the terrific zoo collection, we got to meet up-close and personal, a young ground hornbill, Gregory the fennec fox, Foster the kangaroo, the now grown arctic foxes and of course, the popcorn smelling adorable, young binturong. Thanks again to Veterinarian and General Curator, Dr. Marc Valitutto for his time and energy. We loved our visit (and will be back).

I love snow days. We did not get the predicted amount of snow but we got enough to allow the Central Park Zoo animals to really enjoy themselves. (Me too). Here’s a a fun trip down memory lane. Zoe, at three years old, enjoyed her first snow at the Central Park Zoo on December 20, 2009.

After a less than impressive snowstorm our walk still provided some good photo ops.
