The day before Hurricane Sandy hit New York City we innocently enjoyed some pumpkin enrichment fun with many of the beautiful animals at the Central Park Zoo. Hope these photos make you smile as much as I did while taking the shots.  There are still a few spaces left in my Fall Photo Workshop next Sunday, November 11th from 9 to 11 AM.  Guaranteed fun. Click here and sign up.

That’s my dog Benny (above) showing off his Halloween costume.  Sadly, Halloween was cancelled in the City but Benny got to wear his costume around Casa Lobo and get many treats.

If you subscribe to my weekly photos (and get them in your in-box) you are probably not able to view my videos from your inbox image.  Just scroll up and click on the Blue link (which is the name of today’s send) and it will take you back to my ‘While at the Zoo’ website where you can watch today’s video selection – mongooses and pumpkin fun from 2011:

It was a very rough week for those who suffered through Hurricane Sandy.  I am only now beginning to see the devastation on TV after emerging from four days without power at Casa Lobo.  The above photo of Benny and me was taken by our doorman before the more difficult days that were to come. Each day got more difficult and I apologize to those that crossed my path as my mood became darker and edgier – and I lost my sense of humor somewhere along the way.  Probably during one of those wretched climbs up 11 flights of stairs with Benny the dog.  In Benny’s defense – he was a trooper and Madison the cat just continued to do her thing (as cats do).  I took some photos along the way and thought I would share them with you.

Here is a link that depicts some great shots from more daring photographers who roamed the City during this past week. The very popular HighLine suffered as well. Closer to my heart, the he NY Aquarium got hit very hard.  Here is a link for photos and if you are inclined to help there are instructions on the NY Aquarium link.

I hope all of you out there are warm dry and safe from harm.

A branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Cloisters is located in beautiful Fort Tryon Park, overlooking the Hudson River. The museum and gardens are devoted to the art of medieval Europe. I love this place.  It is a quick trip on the A train and a lovely walk through the park.  On your way to the Cloisters, do not forget to stop and have a fabulous lunch at the New Leaf Cafe.  The cafe is a part of Bette Midler’s NYRP which is a non-profit organization dedicated to transforming open space in underserved communities to create a greener, more sustainable New York City. In partnership with the City of New York, NYRP is also leading MillionTreesNYC – an initiative to plant and care for one million new trees throughout New York City’s five boroughs by 2017.  All proceeds from the New Leaf Cafe support New York Restoration Project’s mission of turning forgotten spaces into growing places.

Regardless of your opinion about explorer Christopher Columbus, this public art installation  at Columbus Circle is interesting and thought provoking. Japanese artist Tatzu Nishi continues his oeuvre of transforming statues, monuments and architectural details.  We get an intimate perspective of the statue, fabulous views and a six story walk up for exercise. You have until November 18th to check it out.  It is free and worth your time.

While visiting family in California this week we enjoyed an adventure at Safari West in Santa Rosa, CA.  This AZA facility located on 400 gorgeous acres is fun for all.  We toured in a terrific open vehicle while we oohed and aahed all of the wildlife in very close proximity.  I highly recommend this place if you are in the area.

Only three weeks to go until my Central Park Zoo Fall Photography workshop, Sunday, November 11th from 9:00AM-11:00AM.  There are a few spaces still available. Click on this Central Park Zoo link, read all about the workshop and sign up for some guaranteed photo fun. There are many programs and classes for all ages.  Check them all out and plan for a fun fall and winter zoo experience.

I love October complete with it’s feast for the palette and the palate. It is filled with beautiful turning leaves, crisp air, blue skies and a cornucopia of color, texture and shapes.  I was able to capture some of this at the union Square Greenmarket over the weekend.  Check out your local farmer’s market to see what is happening in your area.  Bring your camera and have some fun.

Only about a month to go until my Central Park Zoo Fall Photography workshop, Sunday, November 11th from 9:00AM-11:00AM.  This class is filling up quickly. Click on this Central Park Zoo link  read all about the workshop and sign up for some guaranteed photo fun. We took a drive up to the Litchfield CT to visit a good friend who now works at the Livingston Ripley Waterfowl Conservancy.  All I can say is ‘wow.’  The place is beautiful, pristine and the added vista of the turning leaves made the trip even more special. Swans geese, cranes and ducks as far as the eye can see. It is a not for profit facility dedicated to the conservation and preservation of waterfowl. The Conservancy is open to the public on Fridays and Sundays.  A special shout out to Chuck and Ian for making our visit so memorable.

A visit to the Metropolitan Museum’s Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden through November 4th will allow you to see Argentinian artist Tomás Saraceno ‘s Cloud City.  This installation is fun, spatially disorienting and well worth your time.

The Queens Zoo has a beautiful two month old Texas Longhorn calf living on the farm.  The male calf, born on May 26th weighed 60 pounds at birth.  The zoo also has an active Canadian Lynx, very busy thick-billed parrot habitat, an exciting aviary, bison, pronghorns, coyotes, pumas and more.
