A Return to the Central Park Zoo October 4, 2020

After 200 days at or around home during the COVID19 pandemic I went back to my photography job at the Central Park Zoo this week. It sure felt good to see the entire staff, the grounds and of course the amazing animal collection. For those that have asked, I did indeed commute via subway and was happy to find that the subways were clean and everyone on the train wore a mask (even the panhandlers). Hope you enjoy these return photos. Please continue to stay safe – wear a mask and socially distance. If today’s montage appears different it is because wordpress has changed the look of the page. Sorry about that.

Today is day 200 for me being home during the COVID19 pandemic. It has been a challenging 6.5 months but the good news is I am returning to my photography job at the Central Park Zoo on Tuesday. Hopefully next Sunday’s montage will be fresh images of the fabulous animal collection at CPZ. Today’s montage is the final installment of salutes to children’s games. The jumping jack is a toy whose origins date back thousands of years. The jointed jumping jack figure is a cross between a puppet and paper doll. The figures are generally made from wood and their limbs are jointed and tied to a pull string. When the string is pulled and released, the arms and legs move up and down. Stay healthy and wear a mask please.

It is day 191 for me being home during COVID19. Today I address the changing upcoming season. Our shadows get longer as we head towards fall and winter. I thought you might enjoy seeing some shade being thrown by some of our zoo friends. I know it is not the contemporary meaning of ‘throwing shade’ but it did make me laugh. Stay safe, avoid crowds and wear a mask please. This Sunday’s photo montage is dedicated to the one and only RBG. At the bottom of today’s photos please note the dedicated chair in RBG’s name at our mutual

This is day 184 for me being home during the COVID19 pandemic. I needed some extra smiles this week so I decided to salute all of the adorable lion, tiger and bears cubs we have seen on our many zoo visits over the years. It is day 177 for me being home during the COVID19 pandemic. I continue my theme of cbhildren’s games with one that we used to play on the streets of old Brooklyn when we were kids. My sister and I could not remember our rules but we know for sure – that we played it. Monkey in the Middle, Piggy in the Middle, Pickle in a Dish, Keep Away or Pickle in the Middle, is a children’s game in which two or more players must pass a ball to one another, while a player in the middle attempts to intercept it. Yes, I have stretched the ‘monkey’ theme to include prosimians because – well, I liked the photos. Stay safe, avoid crowds and wear a mask this holiday weekend.

Even though this is day 170 for me being home during COVID19 birthday celebrations must and should go on. Today is seven years since Audrey and Roberta came to live at Casa Lobo. They experienced different house mates over the years starting with Madison the Grumpy Cat and Benny the dog. Then came Jack the one-eyed dog, then Pete the cat and now of course, Mr Pepe the dog. They have gotten along with all and have brought great joy into my house. Here’s to many more years of fun with these two cats. They have their own facebook page with over 900 fans. This is day 163 for me staying home during the COVID19 pandemic. Today I continue with my salute to children’s games with Go Fish! It’s a card game that even I played as a kid. Today’s compilation of photos come from aquariums we have visited all over this country. I know that jellyfish aren’t really fish – but they are pretty – so I included them. Stay safe, stay healthy and wear your mask please.

This is day 149 for me being home during COVID19. Happy to continue with the theme of childrens’ games and songs. Today we salute the Mustelidae, a large family of carnivorous mammals including the weasel, badger, otter, ferret, marten, tayra, sable and wolverines. “Pop! Goes the Weasel” is an English nursery rhyme and singing game. It is often used in Jack in the box toys. For those that like to sing along…https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sazc2J5MO7M

This is day 142 for me being home during COVID19. At my good pal Mary Schwalm’s request I am continuing with my theme of children’s games. Since Mary’s favorite zoo animal is the hippo – here we go. Hungry Hungry Hippos is a table top game for 2–4 players. The idea for the game was published in 1967 by toy inventor Fred Kroll and it was introduced in 1978. The objective of the game is for each player to collect as many marbles as possible with their ‘hippo.’ These fun photos were taken at the Toledo Zoo (thanks Jeff), Sedgwick County Zoo and the Dickerson Park Zoo (thanks Katniss)). The two photos where both Mary and I are feeding the hippo is actually Henry, little Fiona’s father, before he moved to Cincinnati. RIP Henry. You were an amazing hippo. Stay safe please and wear a mask.
