The Philadelphia Zoo is one of my favorite zoos. I love their collection of amazing animals many of whom you can see playing and running or just sitting above your head in their Tree Top Trails and Zoo 360 animal exploration trails. It is a concept that is enriching for both the animals and the visitor. A special shout out to friends Sheila and Jerry (and Tony the rhino) who made this visit even more memorable.

It is bittersweet when zoo friends depart NYC for new adventures elsewhere – but the good news is that I get to visit them wherever they go. So our recent impromptu mini zoocation saw us return to see old friends again at the Toledo Zoo. This zoo always has new things to see. Thanks to Jeff, Terry, Randi, Andy, John, Juan and Chuck for their time and generosity. Our visit was most memorable – and we will be back.

We continued our recent mini-zoocation to South Bend, Indiana, to visit good friend and General Curator at the Potawatomi Zoo, Josh Sisk. What a fun visit. This 23 acre facility is beautiful – with a varied and interesting collection. The sightlines are wonderful and the habitats are large and user friendly to the visitor. They have eight species of primates, four species of big cats, Sichuan Takins (and new baby), red pandas, river otters, anteater and on and on. Copper, their tractable serval is a visitor favorite. There was something new and fascinating around every corner. Thank you Josh for your generosity and time. We loved our visit and will be back for sure.

There’s nothing like an impulsive winter Zoocation. We landed in Detroit and headed straight to our first stop, the Detroit Zoo. We had a blast and spent quite a bit of time enjoying their two polar bears swimming over our heads in their Arctic Ring of Life habitat. A special shout out to Associate Curators Bonnie and Betsie for greeting us, chatting with us and for their generous time and attention. We will be returning in the fall to see their brand new Polk Penguin Conservation Center which opens soon. Did I mention that they have the best zoo food in their Arctic Cafe?

We spent an extraordinary day at the amazing Pinola Aviary located near Shreveport, Louisiana. It is a private aviary containing 300 species of birds Primarily producing waterfowl, they encourage each bird to reproduce and also distribute their surplus birds to other qualified private, public and institutional aviaries and zoological parks. The purpose of this facility is the captive preservation and propagation of birds, not display, therefore the facility is closed to the public. A huge shout out to Jacob and Jessica for hosting our visit and to Marc for allowing me to tag along.

Last week’s visit to New Orleans’ Audubon Zoo was a great treat. This lush 58 acre facility is home to over 2000 animals and proudly displays its culture with the engaging Louisiana Swamp and pristine Jaguar Jungle habitats. A loud shout out to Veterinarian Jim Grillo for hosting us and spending so much of his valuable time showing us around.

The sky is bluer, the crocus’ have bloomed, the daffodils are peeking their heads through winter’s soil and there is a general feeling that spring is in the air. Come visit.

It has been too long since I visited Brooklyn’s Prospect Park Zoo (my childhood zoo). A good friend recently started a new job at PPZ so we decided to pay her a visit. A great time was had by all. Thanks to Kelly for her generosity of time and spirit.

Without any planning we headed downtown to One World Trade Center to see the sensational views from One World Observatory. The views of the City did not disappoint. There were no crowds, no lines – just the City as far as the eye could see. It is fun to try to spy familiar landmarks from such a height. It was a heady experience followed by a visit to the beautiful remembrance space at the 9/11 Memorial at ground level. I recommend this to all.
