Snow leopard mother and cubMy zoocation buddy, Mary Schwalm, was down for a quick visit so we took the opportunity to drive south to the Cape May County Zoo (a first for her and a second visit for me).  The lure of two four month old snow leopard cubs was the driving force for our three hour drive.  It was well worth the drive and it gave us many hours to catch up on things.  It was a beautiful day and the cubs were adorable.

ZOOKEEPER WEEKThe third week in July is National Zoo Keeper Appreciation Week. I appreciate these terrific people all year long and dedicate this week’s photo montage to the 18 people who make everything great at my zoo, the Central Park Zoo.  I thank you, one and all, for all you do – the unsung heroes – each and every day.  If you go to a zoo this week, please say ‘thanks’ to a zoo keeper when you see one. Let’s hear it for ALL of the hard working, dedicated Zoo Keepers out there.

April-fish holdThis week the Central Park Zoo introduced a pair of Titi Monkeys who can be seen upstairs in the tropic zone’s mezzanine. While you are up there do not miss the adorable, very active six baby Banded Mongooses (and their big brother). If you get too warm, cool off in the chilly Penguin House where you can find four species of penguin – Chinstrap, Gentoo, Rockhopper and King. Come visit – it’s fun!

Rodriguez Fruit BatIt has been a couple of months of Sundays (and occasional Wednesdays) since I have featured my home base, the Central Park Zoo.   There’s lots going on at NYC’s little gem of a zoo.  We have three Swan Goose goslings, young Patagonian Cavy twins, baby Banded Mongooses and a young Victorian Crowned Pigeon.  The usual cast of other wonderful animals includes Gus the polar bear, three acrobatic sea lions, April, Katy and Edith and the largest sea duck collection in a zoo in North America.  Come visit – There’s no place like home!

feed meThe Raptor Trust in Millington, NJ  is a wonderful place to visit and support. Owners and operators Len and Diane Soucy hosted us last Sunday on a return visit to this amazing place.  Over the past 40 years Len has taken in, rescued, rehabilitated, released or housed as education animals over 90,000 birds. He has managed to rehabilitate and release almost half that number. Within the 14 acres there is a state-of-the-art medical facilities, quality exterior housing for several hundred birds, and an education building. My good friends who run the Binky Foundation and I plan another visit in the fall when they release a red-tailed hawk in memory of our dear departed friend, Barbara Rosenthal.

Magellanic Penguin ChickWhen visiting my California family we always go to the San Francisco Zoo.  Last week’s visit was extra special because Bird Curator, Dominick Dorsa was our host.  He was amazingly generous with his time and gave my family some memorable extra special zoo access.  A big shout out to Dominick and the staff at the San Francisco Zoo.

Happy Eighth Benny-versary! June 18, 2013

BENNYVERSARYToday is eight years since I adopted my dog, Benny. I know, I know – you are most likely saying to yourselves ‘only eight years?’ Yes, it is true that I have taken and shared hundreds of photos of my little guy so it seems as if he has been around much longer – but it is only eight years.

Those of you that have met him know that he is special. Other than that I am not sure how old he is or what he is – we think he is a combination chihuahua/pug/terrier/bat/truffle pig and a few other things thrown into his DNA. He barks when the phone rings thinking it is someone at the door.  He has too many toys (my fault) and gets too many treats (mea culpa as well).  He knows everyone on the block and his presence has allowed me to meet tons of other people in the ‘hood’.  He loves to go shopping at Staples, Barnes & Noble and Bed Bath & Beyond with me and has met many new friends in those stores too.

There is something about the little guy that makes people smile – and that’s a good thing.  Nary a day goes by that someone does not stop me and ask ‘What kind of dog is that’?  My usual response is ‘He is something special’.

Happy Benny-versary, little guy!  Here is a video I made for our Cinco de Benny anniversary.

TB50Essex County’s Turtle Back Zoo is celebrating its 50th anniversary this weekend. We took a short trip out to West Orange to share their joy. I am sure that my Jersey friends have many sweet memories of childhood trips to the zoo. Turtle Back is a growing Zoo with something for everyone.  Happy Anniversary to you!

kick up your heelsZoocation 2013 ended with a bang at zoo #6 – the all encompassing, totally terrific, St. Louis Zoo.  We did not have any special access at this facility but still managed to spend seven hours wandering around enjoying every minute. The zoo is beautiful, well tended, exciting, with great sight lines for both photographers and casual visitors alike.  There is no doubt we will be back again.  A special shout out to my college roommate Michelle and her husband Allen for being such great hosts while we were in this very special city.  We have already started to plan Zoocation 2013 – Part two, for the fall.
