Next time you visit the Central Park Zoo, or any zoo, take some time to really observe the residents. The animals express themselves in mostly non-verbal ways. Today’s photo montage features leaps, wing spreads and facial expressions that made me smile. Enjoy! Also watch one of my favorite animals in the tropic building at the Central Park Zoo. I have nicknamed this Prehensile-tailed Skink, Leon. If you subscribe to my weekly Sunday photos (and get them in your in-box) you are probably not able to view my videos from your inbox image. May is a glorious month. The recent rains have made the Central Park Zoo‘s gardens even more spectacular. Come visit and see our red pandas, snow leopards, sea lions, lemurs, white-naped cranes, amazing tropical rain forest, our two new baby goats, Marble and Mica and much, much more. Here is special salute to Scooter (and her pals, April and Clarisse) featured in my June, 2007 video of Central Park Zoo’s California sea lions. We will all miss Scooter. She was a very special sea lion. If you subscribe to my weekly Sunday photos (and get them in your in-box) you are probably not able to view my videos from your inbox image. My mother, Lillian Wolfe, is long gone, but her advice, warnings and general ‘Lili-isms’ live on in my daily life. She taught me to fight the good fight, to write letters to City Hall when I was pissed and she also gave me my moral compass (one glance from Lillian told me instantly whether my behavior was acceptable or not – and I got a lot of glances). My sister Terry and I remember many childhood events differently but we both agree that our mother was a pistol. Here’s to Lillian Wolfe and all of the other mothers, caregivers, nurturers, pamperers, surrogates and loving coddlers out there. You make it all work. And a huge salute to all of the Zoo mothers in today’s photo montage.

The Queens Zoo has a great collection of animals from ‘the Americas.’ Their newest arrivals are three Chacoan peccaries, forest mammals native to South America, named Walker, Palito, and Chili. You can also see the baby alpaca, named Cria, a little goat kid and a road runner. Don’t forget to check out the bison, pronghorn, coyotes, bald eagles, lynx, puma and more.

Brooklyn’s Prospect Park Zoo director Denise McClean introduces us to two pairs of dingoes now making their debut: Alkira and Binda, and Dacu and Cobar. Naturally, these four dogs, who hail from Down Under, have been given Aboriginal names. The Prospect Park Zoo’s four dingoes will only steal your heart – not your baby. Much has been made of the famous line “The dingo ate my baby” from the 1988 movie a ‘Cry in the Dark‘ starring Meryl Streep:
Paradies of this famous line are plentiful including this one from a Seinfeld episode:

We had a real treat this week. We were invited by my friend, Marc Valitutto, to visit him at the Staten Island Zoo. Marc is their new General Curator and Veterinarian. He gave us a fabulous tour and shared some of the plans that he has for this 75 year old zoo. I look forward to visiting Marc often and watch as his plans come to light. If you look carefully, you will spot the zoo’s famous Staten Island Chuck, who gives Punxsutawney Phil a run for his money each Ground Hog Day. Not only was the zoo lots of fun, but we got to ride the Staten Island ferry and on the return trip and stopped to visit the beautiful 9/11 Memorial that is right near the ferry and well worth your time. There is a photo of this lovely spot on the bottom of today’s montage.

While in New England to attend my zoo-cation friend’s wedding last weekend, in addition to the festivities, we, of course, had to make time to go to the Stone Zoo to see their adorable baby gibbon, active wolves and new colobus monkey troop.

While in New England to attend a dear friend’s wedding this weekend, in addition to the festivities, we, of course, had to make time to go to the Franklin Park Zoo to see their sweet 18 month old baby gorilla and meet their adorable 18 day old baby ring-tailed lemur. Nebuchadrezzer, gave birth on March 19 inside Franklin Park Zoo’s Tropical Forest. Franklin Park Zoo has eight lemurs, including the new baby. My zoocation pal, Mary Schwalm, drove down to NYC for a very busy local mini-zoocation. One of our journeys took us to the Philadelphia Zoo. We got to see their year old gibbon baby, 10 month old snow leopard cubs, new female lion and fast growing jaguar cub (that we saw last October) as well as a two month old adorable sifaka baby. Enjoy the photos and my video of the breeding Victoria Crowned Pigeons that were seen at the McNeil Avian Center.
