As predicted, when I posted March comes in like a lion you just knew I would also post that March goes out like a lamb. I do hope that all of you are healthy and following the social distancing guidelines. It is day 16 for me at home and I am whittling down my ‘to do’ list. Think I either have to slow down or start to make another list. Enjoy some of these sweet lambs in today’s photo montage. All of these photos were taken at my home base, the Central Park Zoo. Sorry to say they have all grown up now but I remember them as they were – so very cute.

Seeing as how March 1st falls on a Sunday I could not resist the corny idea of posting photos of lions.

Last Sunday’s photo experience at the Central Park Zoo was great. The weather was on our side and the zoo’s animal collection were ready for some Valentine treats. The animals were enriched by the different Valentine themed items placed in each of their habitats. The photographers had almost as much fun (or maybe more) as the animals. Thanks to the Central Park Zoo’s talented and creative zookeepers and managers who made this one heartfelt day.

The same fall visit that included the Roger Williams Park Zoo and the Capron Park Zoo concluded with a stop at Southwick’s Zoo. It is a 300-acre, privately owned and operated, zoological park located in Mendon, Massachusetts. It was opened in 1963, and remains family-operated. It has become a yearly stop for us and is always enjoyable. It is now closed for the season but will re-open in April. No doubt we will be back next fall.

The same rainy, windy, grey late fall day that we visited the Roger Williams Park Zoo in Providence RI, we stopped in at the Capron Park Zoo in Attleboro MA. Again – I believe we were the only two visitors. Despite the weather we had a great time. We got to see two tree climbing river otters (another first for us). The zoo is eight acres but packs a lot into that space. They have three very vocal loving lions who entertained us for quite awhile. If you are in the area I encourage a visit. Last call for next Sunday’s Valentine Tails photo session at the Central Park Zoo. A very few spaces remain open. See ya then.

The 9th and final stop on Zoocation 2019 was the always enjoyable San Francisco Zoo. My good friend and Co-Director of Animal Care Dom Dorsa greeted us and spent quality time showing us all of the new things that are happening at the zoo. I have been coming to SF Zoo for the past 20 years and it feels like a very comfortable second home. Thanks Dom for spending time with us. We will be returning soon.

2019 Pacific Northwest Zoocation continues with stop #6, the Oregon Coast Aquarium. Sorry for the delay in posting photos of this terrific facility but Howl-o-ween, Bats, and Pumpkins took priority in October. The Oregon Coast Aquarium is in Newport, Oregon. It opened in 1992. The facility sits on 23 acres along the very beautiful Yaquina Bay near the Pacific Ocean. A giant shout out to Sally Compton, Communications and Marketing Manager for greeting us early and giving us a fabulous tour and jelly fish experience. First time we ever touched a jelly fish. Very cool indeed. If you find yourself in the area, I encourage a visit.

Zoocation 2019 is in the can. We are back from an eight day, eight zoo/aquarium 1700 mile zoocation in the Pacific Northwest. I will sum it up by saying we had FUN! Made new friends, reunited with some old ones and had lots of laughs, sun and rain. Rain does not dampen our spirits – we just keep on zoo-ing. Up first, the very colorful and exciting Seattle Aquarium. A big thank you to Pam for hosting us at the Aquarium and making our experience even richer. A shout out to Maddie for joining us at the Aquarium and to Judy and Jim for a delicious home cooked salmon meal.

We are off on zoocation for the next couple of weeks celebrating 15 years of zoocationing with a trip to the Pacific Northwest. Looking to reunite with some old friends and to make some new ones along the way. As we leave summer I salute the animal collection at my home base, the Central Park Zoo.
