Today is National Dolphin Day. The day is dedicated to this beautiful and charismatic marine mammal and its importance in protecting the ocean ecosystem. The dolphins shown in today’s montage are Atlantic white-sided dolphins seen on a whale watching excursion out of Gloucester and bottlenosed dolphins seen both at the Indianapolis zoo and San Diego Sea World.

The most prominent secular symbol of the Christian holiday, the Easter bunny, was reportedly introduced to America by German immigrants who brought over their stories of an egg-laying hare. The decoration of eggs is believed to date back to at least the 13th century. In Christianity, rabbits represent rebirth and resurrection, particularly during Easter celebrations. The rabbit’s ability to reproduce quickly also signifies fertility and new life. Rabbits are the ‘go to’ animal during this holiday. See if you can spot some of these breeds in today’s photo montage: Himalayans, Belgian Hares, Flemish Giants, Holland Lops, Giant Chinchillas, Dwarf Hotots, Harelquins, Thriantas. We have never had a bunny at Casa Lobo so the photo above is the closest we could get.

Yesterday was World Bear Day. There are eight species of bear: the American black bear, Asiatic black bear, the brown bear, the giant panda, the polar bear, the sloth bear, the spectacled bear, and the sun bear. I honor these grand mammals with today’s photo montage. Sending the photos out to you with lots of bear hugs.

I usually post photos of clocks when we change from daylight savings time and standard time. Not today. I am taking the phrase ’spring forward’ to showcase animals actually springing forward. Sorry about that lack of an hour’s sleep – especially on Oscar Sunday when we on the East coast struggle to stay awake until the end of the Oscar broadcast.

The Museum of the Dog has a fun new exhibit thru April. ‘Outfoxed‘ features Fox Terriers, both Smooth and Wire who have been among the most popular and versatile breeds; whether on the hunt with the hounds, in the field chasing rabbits, in the barn ratting or, these days, as a delightfully upbeat companion dog. While I am not a fan of hunts, I am a fan of this dog museum. ‘The exhibition Outfoxed: Fox Terriers and Friends explores the development of the breed, the variety of their jobs, and chronicles the many champions in the collection. The list of famous Fox Terriers in the show reads like a who’s-who in the history of the breed. Visitors will encounter portrayals of such notables including: Belgrave Joe, one of the early fathers of the breed, Cackler of Notts, the Duchess of Newcastle’s masterpiece, Caesar, Cackler’s son and Edward VII’s beloved companion, The Totteridge XI, Francis Redmond’s kennel as painted by Arthur Wardle and Maude Earl and Nornay Saddler, considered by many as close to perfection in the breed’. My own little Chihuahua, Mr. Pepe, bears no regal markings but as far as I am concerned he is Best in Show.

Next Saturday starts the Chinese Lunar New Year. It is the Year of the Dragon . My Asian zodiac sign aligns with the Year of the Monkey. What are you? Happy New Year to one and all (and if you have already broken your New Year’s resolutions from a month ago – you can start all over again next Saturday).

Last year’s Meet the Breeds at the Javitts Convention Center was a lot of fun. So why not go again I said to myself? I guess the word got out that it was a fun event. Well…it was crowded, loud and unruly this year. That said, I did enjoy myself but by the time I left it was hard to see the dogs because of the enormous number of humans, baby carriages and unattended children. Before it got overly crowded I was able to appreciate the dogs and their quirky and delightful handlers. I have included just some of the 125 breeds in today’s montage. Woof!

Yesterday was Penguin Awareness Day. It is celebrated to help raise awareness about the dwindling numbers of these beautiful black and white creatures, primarily due to human activity and climate change around the globe. It hopes to shine a light on the importance of the conservation of penguin habitats. I was lucky to take the trip of a lifetime 19 years ago to Antarctica, the Falklands and South Georgia. I selected some those photos to share with you today. I hope they bring a smile to your face.

Today’s montage completes 20 years of my sending out these Sunday photos. By my calculations (and I won the math award in eighth grade) that’s over 1000 Sunday photo montages. Yikes! Thanks for coming along for the ride. Some of you have been with me for the entire 20 years. I am very thankful for that and welcome all of my new subscribers. Holiday time is always fun at our house. We celebrate most holidays (especially the ones that demand we wear a hat).
