The Raptor Trust in Millington, NJ is a wonderful place to visit and support. Owners and operators Len and Diane Soucy hosted us last Sunday on a return visit to this amazing place. Over the past 40 years Len has taken in, rescued, rehabilitated, released or housed as education animals over 90,000 birds. He has managed to rehabilitate and release almost half that number. Within the 14 acres there is a state-of-the-art medical facilities, quality exterior housing for several hundred birds, and an education building. My good friends who run the Binky Foundation and I plan another visit in the fall when they release a red-tailed hawk in memory of our dear departed friend, Barbara Rosenthal.

When visiting my California family we always go to the San Francisco Zoo. Last week’s visit was extra special because Bird Curator, Dominick Dorsa was our host. He was amazingly generous with his time and gave my family some memorable extra special zoo access. A big shout out to Dominick and the staff at the San Francisco Zoo.

Zoocation Zoo #3, the Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines, Iowa was a delightful 22 acre surprise. Lots of terrific habitats, including adorable baby snow monkeys, free range joeys and active marine mammals. Their Africa Savannah was not quite open due to recent flooding but when it is open the zoo will be even better. If you are in the area – I recommend a visit.

I credit good friend Jamie with our idea for zoocation 2013, when she relocated to the Minnesota Zoo, to become their Bird Supervisor. Zoo #2 on was an all access pass with Jamie and her colleagues as they showed us their fantastic zoo. We got an up close and personal visit with their two adorable penguin chicks, a behind the scenes visit in the enormous tropics trail aviary, the Grizzly coast, the sea otter area, Minnesota trail and much more. Looking forward to revisiting with Jamie in the coming years as we watch this already enormous zoo grow bigger and better. A big Lobo shout out to Jamie!

My mother, Lillian Wolfe, is long gone, but her advice, warnings and general ‘Lili-isms’ live on in my daily life. She taught me to fight the good fight and to write letters to City Hall when I was pissed. She also gave me my moral compass – one glance from Lillian told me instantly whether my behavior was acceptable or not – and I got a lot of glances. My sister Terry and I remember many childhood events differently but we both agree that our mother was a pistol. Here’s to Lillian Wolfe and all of the other mothers, caregivers, nurturers, pamperers, surrogates and loving coddlers out there. You make it all work. And a huge salute to all of the Zoo mothers in today’s photo montage.
Zoocation 2013 has come to an end. It was a zoo-sastional. Stay tuned to see six new montages from our latest zoo-venture.

We took a mini-zoocation south to the Philadelphia Zoo on one of the coldest days of the season. We essentially had the entire zoo to ourselves. It was a great day filled with wonderfully active animals and we caught sight of our first Prehensile-tailed porcupine baby, called a porcupette. Check out the video below today’s montage. It has been a great year for new faces, places and spaces. Thank you for coming along for the ride. For those that are looking for exciting zoo photo outings, on Saturday, February 2nd (Groundhog Day) I will be running a Winter Photo Adventure for adults and children at the Central Park Zoo. We will go on a family scavenger hunt in the zoo using our cameras. Ticket price includes 1 child and 1 adult. (Ages 6-18 with adult.) In my eighth end of the year tradition, I bring you my closing photo montage and also take a look back at the new places that we have visited.
