The Morgan Library has a wonderful, informative exhibit about Beatrix Potter (1866 – 1943). She was an English writer, Illustrator, naturalist and way ahead of her time, conservationist. She is best known for her children’s books featuring animals such as Peter Rabbit, which was her first commercially published work in 1902. Her books, including 23 Tales and has sold more than 250 million copies. She was an entrepreneur and a pioneer of character merchandising. In1903, Peter Rabbit was the first fictional character to be made into a patented stuffed toy, making him the oldest licensed character. Potter’s books continue to sell throughout the world in many languages with her stories being retold in songs, films, ballet, and animations. Her life is depicted in two films and a television series. The Morgan Library is one of my favorite places to visit in Manhattan. It also has the best gift shop. This exhibit runs through June 9th.

The most prominent secular symbol of the Christian holiday, the Easter bunny, was reportedly introduced to America by German immigrants who brought over their stories of an egg-laying hare. The decoration of eggs is believed to date back to at least the 13th century. In Christianity, rabbits represent rebirth and resurrection, particularly during Easter celebrations. The rabbit’s ability to reproduce quickly also signifies fertility and new life. Rabbits are the ‘go to’ animal during this holiday. See if you can spot some of these breeds in today’s photo montage: Himalayans, Belgian Hares, Flemish Giants, Holland Lops, Giant Chinchillas, Dwarf Hotots, Harelquins, Thriantas. We have never had a bunny at Casa Lobo so the photo above is the closest we could get.

Yesterday was Penguin Awareness Day. It is celebrated to help raise awareness about the dwindling numbers of these beautiful black and white creatures, primarily due to human activity and climate change around the globe. It hopes to shine a light on the importance of the conservation of penguin habitats. I was lucky to take the trip of a lifetime 19 years ago to Antarctica, the Falklands and South Georgia. I selected some those photos to share with you today. I hope they bring a smile to your face.

Today’s montage completes 20 years of my sending out these Sunday photos. By my calculations (and I won the math award in eighth grade) that’s over 1000 Sunday photo montages. Yikes! Thanks for coming along for the ride. Some of you have been with me for the entire 20 years. I am very thankful for that and welcome all of my new subscribers. Hoping to do my best to keep posting on Sundays. I leave you as always with no ‘ifs, just ends, butts and tushies.’ Wishing everyone a very happy and healthy New Year.

When I am not taking photos at my job at the Central Park Zoo or in my wanderings around NYC I take photos of my own gang at home which includes three cats and a dog. How wonderful to discover that Fotografiska (a NY branch of the Swedish photography museum) was presenting an exhibit of pet photography and its role in culture. This special space is in my neighborhood so how could I resist. As the museum states – ‘With this exhibition we want to celebrate and acknowledge our constant companions, their presence in Western art and popular culture, and our multifaceted relationship with them. We place these animals on a pedestal, and consider them from all perspectives: as life partners, status symbols, friends and family members, and as works of art’. I have included some photos of my own gang (and me). See if you can find us all. Woof!

The Museum of Art and Design presents Generation Paper: A Fashion Phenom of the 1960s which explores the era’s short-lived phenomenon of paper fashion through more than 60 rare garments and accessories crafted from non-woven textiles. These fashions, introduced in 1966 as a promotional campaign for Scott Paper Company, combined bold, graphic design with space-age innovations in materials. Sporting patterns inspired by pop art, op art, anti-war “flower power,” and more, paper fashion’s iconic silhouettes and styles—from A-line mini dresses to bikinis—became daring demonstrations of the durability and design potential of the era’s newly developed paper-like fibers, such as rayon (a cellulose fiber), polyester, and other synthetic blends. For those that are interested here is a brief history of Paper Dresses. This exhibit is on thru August 27.

When I was a wee lass there wasn’t much to watch on our black and white TV. I do remember ‘Father Knows Best.’ We watched it but it surely did not remind me of my family. How about you? While most caregivers in the animal kingdom are mothers, there are some fathers who join in the role as caregiver. I salute some of those fathers out there in today’s photo montage. Coincidentally – tomorrow is also National Martini Day. Why not celebrate that special day today? The photo above today’s montage is of my little Wolfe family -father, mother, sister and me (circa – the beginning of time).
Happy Mother’s Day – 2023 May 14, 2023

A very Happy Mother’s Day to all to all of the mothers, caregivers, nurturers, pamperers, surrogates and loving coddlers out there. Our mother, Lillian Wolfe, is long gone, but her advice, warnings and general ‘Lili-isms’ live on in our daily lives. She taught us to laugh at life, to think, to question authority, to march, to protest – to fight the good fight. She also gave us our moral compass – one glance from Lillian told us instantly whether our behavior was acceptable or not – and I got a lot of glances. My sister Terry and I remember many childhood events differently but we both agree that our mother was a pistol. Here’s to Lillian Wolfe – she formed and informed what we are today. Today’s montage is dedicated to two of my friends who left us before their time. Neither was a mother but both were great role models, teachers and creative forces. Here’s to Elise and Sue. Carpe diem!

Happy Valentine’s Day (two days early). Lots of snuggling, kanoodling, breeding and nesting going on all over the animal world. Smooches to you all!
