As most of you know, on the first day of spring we got four inches of snow in the Big Apple. I thought it was a good time to share some of the last snowy day zoo photos for awhile (I hope).

I love snow days. We did not get the predicted amount of snow but we got enough to allow the Central Park Zoo animals to really enjoy themselves. (Me too). Here’s a a fun trip down memory lane. Zoe, at three years old, enjoyed her first snow at the Central Park Zoo on December 20, 2009.

Yes, it is cold but if you are dressed correctly winter is just about the best time to visit a zoo. The crowds are gone and many of the temperate animals are more active and engaging. Today’s montage is devoted to that energy.
Want to see these gorgeous animals up close an very personal? Come to my next Wildlife Photo Workshop at the Central Park Zoo on Sunday, January 25th from 8:30 to 10:30. Click here, scroll to Adult Programs and sign up.

There’s nothing quite like watching animals frolic in the snow. Tuesday’s few inches of snow made for some great zoo animal action. This week’s montage features Central Park Zoo’s debut of grizzly bears, Betty and Veronica and seven month old snow leopard cub, Malala, enjoying her first taste of snow. The snow monkeys and red pandas also enjoyed their first snow of 2015. Come visit.

A New Year’s trip to the West Coast found us once again at the wonderful San Francisco Zoo. This zoo holds a special place for my California family and me. A loud shout out to Dom Dorsa, Curator of Birds and Reptiles for his generosity, spirit and time. You made our visit very special.

‘Tis the season for gift giving and one of the great things about zoos is that gifts are in abundance and they keep on giving all year long. Today’s montage is devoted to some of the 2014 gifts at the Central Park Zoo. Included are two adorable, recently arrived, juvenile harbor seals, two sunbittens, a Victorian crowned-pigeon, leaf-tailed geckos, red-crested turaco chicks, Papaya the sheep, a white-naped crane chick, poison dart frogs, oodles of endangered duckings and of course, Malala, the snow leopard cub. Stay tuned to meet Betty and Veronica, two grizzly bears who will be making their debut soon. Come visit the zoo and give yourself a gift.

Zoo photography is both challenging and fun. They say the eyes are the window to the soul – I don’t know about that – but I do know if you can capture a gorgeous creature looking back at you – it is a great photo moment. A special connection is made between the subject and the viewer. Today’s montage is devoted to those moments.
Are you getting a new camera, lens or phone for Christmas, Hanukkah (or whatever you celebrate)? Why not try it out at my next Wildlife Photo Workshop at the Central Park Zoo on Sunday, January 25th from 8:30 to 10:30. Perhaps we will get lucky and have snowy photo ops but I can surely guarantee you will see some new residents at the zoo and have fun all before the zoo opens to the public. Click here, scroll to Adult Programs and sign up.
My zoocation buddy and good friend Mary Schwalm is again offering her amazing 2015 desk calendars. The images are from this year’s zoocations. The calendar makes a great gift for office an swap, holiday party, stocking stuffer, and a unique gift to enjoy throughout the year. Just $10 – for details click here.

The four California sea lions who live at the Central Park Zoo never cease to amaze. They flip, flap, flop and fly across the pool and into the air. Come watch April, Katie, Edith, little Charlie and of course their dazzling zookeepers daily during their feed and demonstration at 11:30, 1:30 and 3:30 each day.
