This was a fun montage to create. I didn’t realize how many animals could be included in this red, white and blue themed photo montage. Most of the animals depicted were taken at my home base, the Central Park Zoo. Obvious exclusions are the giant panda, cassowary (above) and the arctic fox (although we used to house that species) and the red-eyed tree frog (taken at the Prospect Park Zoo). Hope you all have a very safe and happy Fourth of July.

My timing was excellent this week. Not only did spring finally arrive in New York City, but I was able to return to work after 10 weeks of shoulder recovery and physical therapy (ouch). The animals, the welcoming staff, the spring flowers and blossoming trees were music to my ears and subjects to be photographed. Enjoy this week’s photos.

This week is St. Patrick’s Day. It is customary to wear green clothing, shamrocks or an accessory; which is called the “wearing of the green“. Many of our Central Park Zoo animals sport green everyday.

Zoo photography is both challenging and fun. They say the eyes are the window to the soul – I don’t know about that – but I do know if you can capture a gorgeous creature looking back at you – it is a great photo moment. Today’s montage is devoted to those moments. And yes, you will see my Jack the one-eyed dog depicted here as well. Speaking of Jack, while on a walk in Madison Square Park on Friday we met the Dogist. He took Jack’s photo, chatted and we shared some information. The rest is history. As of this morning, his Instagram photo of Jack had 155,000 likes.

I decided to take a break from this winter’s cold and spend some quality time in the Central Park Zoo’s tropical rain forest. It was a very good idea. Enjoy these warm photos.

Before this week’s 50 degree surge in temperatures we enjoyed some more snowy fun at the Central Park Zoo. There is one more photo series (called Valentine Tails) which will be held on Sun, Feb 11, 2018 8:30AM – 10:00AM. There are a few spaces left. Think hearts and fun.

Most of us experienced bone chilling temperatures this week along with Thursday’s bomb cyclone snowstorm. The option of staying home eluded me and off I went to my home base, the Central Park Zoo. It was frigid, it was windy, it hurt – but worth it to watch the animals whose first names are ‘snow’ enjoy the storm. The top eight rows of photos depict our snow leopards and snow monkeys and were taken Thursday and the bottom five rows of photos are vintage 2014 pics. Special note to Central Park Zoo fans – the top photo is of our new male snow leopard named Kumush. If you are stuck inside in this frozen tundra of weather why not visit my youtube site. I haven’t uploaded a video in a very long time but there are 10 years of videos for you to enjoy. I am closing in on a million views.

We had three days of snow in NYC this week. I am lucky. I do not have to shovel or drive in the snow. I am a mass transit kind of gal. I get to reap the rewards of freshly fallen snow photographing beautiful animals enjoying it as much as I do. That said, I salute the zookeepers, managers and maintenance department for working so hard to get our zoo open at 10AM so that the public can enjoy a beautiful, safe space.My good friend and zoocation buddy Mary Schwalm has created another sensational 2018 Calendar.
