Spring has finally really sprung (if you don’t mind all of the rain we have had) in New York City. The Central Park Zoo looks especially lush and beautiful. My favorite flowers and trees are in season including laburnum, redbud, wisteria, allium, tulips and daffodils. Come visit.

My timing was excellent this week. Not only did spring finally arrive in New York City, but I was able to return to work after 10 weeks of shoulder recovery and physical therapy (ouch). The animals, the welcoming staff, the spring flowers and blossoming trees were music to my ears and subjects to be photographed. Enjoy this week’s photos.

I bit the bullet this week and tried out my new shoulder while carrying the big camera, not just the phone. The good news is that all went well and I will be headed back to my zoo job shortly. My sports career may be over (inset laughter here), but not my photography gig. The Prospect Park Zoo was fun, as always.

Last Sunday’s fun photo Valentine opportunity at the Central Park Zoo was wet, cold and windy but it did not deter our hearty group of wildlife photographers. Today’s montage includes photos from last Sunday and photos from a much sunnier experience back in 2016.

February 16th starts the (Chinese) Lunar New Year. It is the year of the dog. I will use as today’s doggie model — my adorable boy, Jack . The other zodiac signs are the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. If you don’t know what you are you can find it here. Zoo photography is both challenging and fun. They say the eyes are the window to the soul – I don’t know about that – but I do know if you can capture a gorgeous creature looking back at you – it is a great photo moment. Today’s montage is devoted to those moments. And yes, you will see my Jack the one-eyed dog depicted here as well. Speaking of Jack, while on a walk in Madison Square Park on Friday we met the Dogist. He took Jack’s photo, chatted and we shared some information. The rest is history. As of this morning, his Instagram photo of Jack had 155,000 likes.

Before this week’s 50 degree surge in temperatures we enjoyed some more snowy fun at the Central Park Zoo. There is one more photo series (called Valentine Tails) which will be held on Sun, Feb 11, 2018 8:30AM – 10:00AM. There are a few spaces left. Think hearts and fun.

We had three days of snow in NYC this week. I am lucky. I do not have to shovel or drive in the snow. I am a mass transit kind of gal. I get to reap the rewards of freshly fallen snow photographing beautiful animals enjoying it as much as I do. That said, I salute the zookeepers, managers and maintenance department for working so hard to get our zoo open at 10AM so that the public can enjoy a beautiful, safe space.My good friend and zoocation buddy Mary Schwalm has created another sensational 2018 Calendar. Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade November 26, 2017

We scored bleacher tickets to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Truth be told, I am not a fan of parades, but my house guests were thrilled – so off we went. The bad news was that we arrived so early so had to endure the frigid temperatures for almost two hours before the parade. The good news is that we got great seats. We totally enjoyed the event. The crowd was upbeat, the kids delightful and my hats off to the many New York City workers who held it all together. We had to leave early in order to get ready for our own turkey dinner so we missed Santa’s arrival. We all thawed out by around three PM. Most likely I will not repeat this activity – but we had a grand time. Thank you Macy’s and NYC.
