BettyAs most of you know, on the first day of spring we got four inches of snow in the Big Apple.  I thought it was a good time to share some of the last snowy day zoo photos for awhile (I hope).LASTGASP

MALALAI love snow days.  We did not get the predicted amount of snow but we got enough to allow the Central Park Zoo animals to really enjoy themselves.  (Me too). Here’s a a fun trip down memory lane.  Zoe, at three years old, enjoyed her first snow at the Central Park Zoo on December 20, 2009.  SNOWDAY

CPZ GrizzlyYes, it is cold but if you are dressed correctly winter is just about the best time to visit a zoo. The crowds are gone and many of the temperate animals are more active and engaging.  Today’s montage is devoted to that energy.

Want to see these gorgeous animals up close an very personal?  Come to my next Wildlife Photo Workshop at the Central Park Zoo on Sunday, January 25th from 8:30 to 10:30. Click here, scroll to Adult Programs and sign up.winterfun

Malala in snowThere’s nothing quite like watching animals frolic in the snow. Tuesday’s few inches of snow made for some great zoo animal action.  This week’s montage features Central Park Zoo’s debut of grizzly bears, Betty and Veronica and seven month old snow leopard cub, Malala, enjoying her first taste of snow. The snow monkeys and red pandas also enjoyed their first snow of 2015. Come visit.firstsnow2015

MalalaWinter is the best time to visit snow leopards at the Central Park Zoo.  Come meet Zoe and her six month old cub, Malala in one habitat and daddy Askai in another.  If you are in Bryant Park this winter, check out the Celsius Bar and Restaurant, which has great views of the skating rink, tree and shops. The Celsius Bar also features Snow Leopard Vodka  along with four of my huge photos of the Central Park Zoo’s snow leopards on display thru March 1st.  Very very cool indeed. You can get an idea of the facility as you scroll down today’s montage.

BiruZoo photography is both challenging and fun. They say the eyes are the window to the soul – I don’t know about that – but I do know if you can capture a gorgeous creature looking back at you – it is a great photo moment.  A special connection is made between the subject and the viewer. Today’s montage is devoted to those moments.

Are you getting a new camera, lens or phone for Christmas, Hanukkah (or whatever you celebrate)?  Why not try it out at my next Wildlife Photo Workshop at the Central Park Zoo on Sunday, January 25th from 8:30 to 10:30.  Perhaps we will get lucky and have snowy photo ops but I can surely guarantee you will see some new residents at the zoo and have fun all before the zoo opens to the public. My zoocation buddy and good friend Mary Schwalm is again offering her amazing 2015 desk calendars. The images are from this year’s zoocations. The calendar makes a great gift for office an swap, holiday party, stocking stuffer, and a unique gift to enjoy throughout the year. Just $10 – for details click here.15calendareyeshaveit

For all of those camera enthusiasts out there, I’ll be running a Fall Foliage photography workshop at the Central Park Zoo on  October 19 from 8:30 to 10:30. I will arrange some special pumpkin and other activities so you can get great animal shots. Here is a link to last year’s photos from this event. Pumpkintastic! CAPTIONPLEASE

Mongoose pupIt has been almost four months since I shared photos from my home base, the Central Park Zoo. Our May, all Tennessee Zoocation, my June Arctic adventure and visits to other terrific zoos have made me derelict in sending out photos from my favorite zoo. Enjoy!CPZ7.2014

Snow Leopard CubI was not planning to go to the zoo on Friday’s very cold day but the lure of freshly fallen snow and the thought of snow leopard cubs frolicking in the snow was too much for me to resist. Enjoy their antics as well as some other familiar zoo faces in the beautiful fresh snow. If you haven’t come to see these seven month old cubs yet – now is the perfect time to catch them in all of their kitten-like friskiness.

Yawning TitiThose lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer bring on those summer time yawns.  Catching and then photographing one of the Central Park Zoo animals mid-yawn is always fun. Oh, there is one beautiful face that does not belong today – can you find him?
