My usual Sunday photo montages were interrupted by some health stuff – but I am am back and am happy to continue sharing photos from our recent Texas zoocation. The Caldwell Zoo  in Tyler Texas was the second stop on ZooCation 2015. I thought this zoo was near perfect.  It had a terrific layout, great big collection of animals, and amazing sight lines (especially the views through the savannah). We were fortunate to be at the zoo on one of their enrichment days. We could hardly keep up with all of the wonderful enrichment treats that were given to the animals.  The staff was warm and friendly and made our visit very special.  Huge and lous shout outs to Scotty, Joanna and Amanda for enriching our visit. Happy Mother’s Day to all of the mothers, caregivers, nurturers, pamperers, surrogates and loving coddlers out there. Most of today’s photos were taken on last week’s all Texas Zoocation.  We had a blast and I will be posting photos of those great Texas zoos in the coming weeks.

My mother, Lillian Wolfe, is long gone, but her advice, warnings and general ‘Lili-isms’ live on in our daily lives.  She taught us to laugh at life, to think, to question authority, to march, to protest and generally act upon what we thought was wrong. She also gave  us our moral compass – one glance from Lillian told us instantly whether our behavior was acceptable or not – and I got a lot of glances.  My sister Terry and I remember many childhood events differently but we both agree that our mother was a  pistol. Here’s to Lillian Wolfe – she formed and informed what we are today.MD2015

Grizzly BearYes, it is still chilly in NYC but spring has definitely sprung with magnolias, forsythia, blue bells, hellebores, budding crab apples, cherry blossoms and more.  The Central Park Zoo sheep have been sheared, the school groups enjoy the zoo on their outings and in general – it is good to be alive.

We embark on our Texas 2015 Zoocation next week. Looking forward to six new zoos and an aquarium and hopefully meeting new friends along the way.AHSPRING

NUKANothing like Coney Island on a frigid winter’s day with a visit to Nathan’s (yum) and Brooklyn’s NY Aquarium.  The Aquarium is still undergoing construction from the devastation of Hurricane Sandy and the promises of new and exciting exhibits will be happening soon(ish). A huge shout out to Kayla, Martha, the keeper staff and the amazing Nuka the walrus for making us feel so very welcome. We will be back.NYAQ2015

brrrrAs much of the country suffers from the cold it has also been a brutally cold week in the frozen Apple.  Last Sunday a bunch of (crazy) wildlife enthusiasts boarded a NY Water Taxi to explore NY harbor and attempt to see the seals and wildlife led by the ever so optimistic Audubon guide. I saw more ice formations than wildlife but it was an adventure never the less. We did not see any seals but you can check out photos from two years ago when we did the same outing and actually saw harbor seals. . There are a few more weeks of these tours if you want to try your luck.

In two weeks, on March 8th, from 8:30 to 10:30 we will be running our popular photo series – Breakfast with the Birds at the Central Park Zoo.  The class will be held in the warmth of the Tropic Zone. Our Collections Manager is running the class and will share some fun stories about our individual birds and relationships.  Bring your cameras and get some tips about photographing birds from me. Malala in snowThere’s nothing quite like watching animals frolic in the snow. Tuesday’s few inches of snow made for some great zoo animal action.  This week’s montage features Central Park Zoo’s debut of grizzly bears, Betty and Veronica and seven month old snow leopard cub, Malala, enjoying her first taste of snow. The snow monkeys and red pandas also enjoyed their first snow of 2015. Come visit.firstsnow2015

EdithThe four California sea lions who live at the Central Park Zoo never cease to amaze.  They flip, flap, flop and fly across the pool and into the air.  Come watch April, Katie, Edith, little Charlie and of course their dazzling zookeepers daily during their feed and demonstration at 11:30, 1:30 and 3:30 each day.  fff

Stone LynxLast month’s min-zoocation in New England finished up at the always fun Stone Zoo in Stoneham MA where we got to see adorable Lynx cubs, two Colobus babies and a gorgeous new wolf troop.

There are still a few spaces left in next Saturday’s photo workshop (November 8th, from 8:30 to 10:30) at the Central Park Zoo. We won’t be having a pumpkin fest but we will be doing other fun things.  Sign up here and enjoy lots of photo ops – all before the zoo opens.STONEZOO2014
