Some of you might remember doggies Sweet Benny and One-eyed Jack and of course grumpy Madison the cat who have all crossed that rainbow bridge. Our present gang includes Audrey, Roberta and Pete the cats with Mr. Pepe the dog. No animal was singed, harmed or abused in any way in the making of these photos – treats were involved. Hanukkah Sameach!

It is no secret that I love this time of year. I enjoy the amazing colors of the changing leaves and the fullness of the fall harvest. My love of pumpkins is well known. I went to the Union Square Green Market yesterday to feast on all of the fabulous colors and textures. I admit to not knowing what some of that produce was…but I enjoyed it fully. And yes, I added some of my pets to show you how much they too, enjoy this season. Enjoy!

Dog Days of Summer August 17, 2025

Raise your hand if you think this summer has been stupid hot. (Both my hands are raised). The dog days of summer are those hot and sultry days we are now experiencing. We have officially just ended that period called the dog days of summer— it is that time in August when the humidity is so high that you could cut the air with a knife. This year those 40 days happened between Thu, Jul 3, 2025 – Mon, Aug 11, 2025. I don’t think we are getting out of this weather pattern soon anytime soon. It is historically the period following the heliacal rising of the star system Sirius, which Hellenistic astrology connected with heat, drought, sudden thunderstorms, lethargy, fever, mad dogs, bad luck and curly hair. They are now taken to be the hottest, most uncomfortable part of summer in the Northern Hemisphere. So I have chosen to share my dogs of summer (both past and present), along with some of my cats to honor this dreaded season. I salute Sweet Benny, One-eyed Jack, Mr Pepe, and some of their walking buddies including Fuego, Conrad, Ivy and Max. Included are my present cats, Roberta, Audrey and Pete. We all await those falling leaves and pumpkins.

My apartment has a perfect view of the beginning of the annual NYC Pride Parade. It is always festive, colorful, fun and very loud. Hope everyone enjoys the day wherever you are. Stay safe and have fun. My little gang (Mr. Pepe, Roberta, Audrey and Pete) have gone all out this year in colors of the rainbow. Most of these photos are from previous Pride Parades but since the Parade doesn’t start for another five hours enjoy my past photos.

Top o’ the morning to all. There are nine Native Dogs of Ireland. Two Hounds – Irish Wolfhound and Kerry Beagle, three Gun dogs – Irish Water Spaniel, Irish Red Setter and Irish Red & White Setter, four Terriers – Irish Terrier, Irish Glen of Imaal Terrier, Irish Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier and Kerry Blue Terrier. The Museum of the Dog featured these nine breeds in their latest exhibit. It is on through March 30th. There are also cats with Irish roots. Namely the Manx cat as well as the Cymric cat. Both of these cat types have very short to entirely absent tails as a mutation to the usual cat body structure. The Cymric cat is the long haired variety of the Manx. Today’s photo montage features all of these splendid breeds. You might notice that I took the liberty of including some of my own cherished pets in all their Irish splendor. The bottom photo is a feature of the Museum of the Dog. There’s a booth where you snap your photo and the Museum pairs you up with your dog match. This visit I was matched with a Maltese who is part of the ’toy group’ and is gentle, playful and charming. Perfect!

We attended the Westminster Dog Show once again. We like the Benching area the best. You can schmooze with the handlers, the owners, the judges and of course the adorable pooches. I did not get a photo of Monty the Giant Schnauzer who won Best in Show but all of the contenders were winners to me. I especially am fond of the dog at the bottom of today’s photo montage. That’s my boy, Mr Pepe, who is always a good boy and Best in Show to me. Woof!

Holiday time is always fun at our house. We celebrate most holidays (especially the ones that demand the wearing of a hat). My little present gang of critters, Mr. Pepe, Roberta, Audrey and Pete and our loved ones who no longer are here, Sweet Benny, Madison the elder cat and One-eyed Jack) are/were all good sports and since today is Christmas and the first night of Hanukkah we would like to share some of those fun moments with you. Wishing all of you and yours a very merry and a happy. Cheers!

We went to the New York Historical Society (that has questionably rebranded itself as New York Historical) to see their new exhibition called Pets and the City. Most of us remember when police were called to get Ming the tiger out of a bathtub in the Bronx in 2001, those amazing service dogs at 9/11 and recent history involving Flaco the Eurasian eagle owl’s life after a vandal cut through his enclosure and released him into the wilds of Central Park. The exhibit covers lots of ground and is thoroughly enjoyable. It explores the visual history of New Yorkers and their ‘animal companions over the last two and a half centuries, tracing the evolving relationship between Gotham’s people and its animals as the city grew increasingly urbanized and industrialized.Through a broad spectrum of works of art, objects, documents, memorabilia, and clips from film and television, the exhibition surveys the evolution of pets—from their presence among the Lenape and Haudenosaunee and the hunting culture of settlers through their insinuation into the urban family and onto the pampered pets of today, which enjoy their own public rights. Drawn largely from The New York Historical’s collections, Pets and the City also investigates the reasons for the soaring pet population, especially after 9/11 and during the COVID-19 crisis, as well as issues surrounding pet adoption, the trafficking of exotic animals, and service animals’. The exhibit can be seen through April 20, 2025. Speaking of pampered pets – my Gang of Four can be seen in the bottom photo. If you do not know them already, please meet cats Audrey, Roberta and Pete and our very special dog, Mr. Pepe. Trust me – they are living their best lives.

An October surprise for you. We love Halloween here at Casa Lobo and have been celebrating it since the beginning of time. Here is a photo montage of my extremely wonderful pets over the years. No animal was harmed in the making of these photos. Lots of treats were had by all. A shout out to Madison, Sweet Benny, One-eyed Jack, Audrey, Roberta, Pete and of course, the very photogenic Mr. Pepe.
