I want to wish a very Happy Mother’s Day to all to all of the mothers, caregivers, nurturers, pamperers, surrogates and loving coddlers out there regardless of how you celebrate the day. Our mother, Lillian Wolfe, is long gone, but her advice, warnings and general ‘Lili-isms’ live on in our daily lives. She taught us to laugh at life, to think, to question authority, to march, to protest – to fight the good fight. She also gave us our moral compass – one glance from Lillian told us instantly whether our behavior was acceptable or not – and I got a lot of glances. My sister Terry and I remember many childhood events differently but we both agree that our mother was a pistol. Here’s to Lillian Wolfe – she formed and informed what we are today.

Took a trip to the Bronx Zoo about a month ago to meet up with some good friends and their kids. It was a fun visit but we did not get to see much of the zoo (again, kids). Enjoy the photos and happy May to one and all.

April 8th, was National Zoo Lover’s Day. Needless to say – I am a big zoo fan. I stopped counting but think we have been to about 150 zoos and aquariums on our wonderful, fun zoocations that came to a screeching halt when COVID arrived. Looking forward to returning to those trips someday soon. Today’s photo montage features some photos from those adventures.
– It is estimated that over 600 million people visit zoos each year.
– There are more than 2,800 zoos and aquariums in the world.
– Germany has more zoos than any other country – 414!
– The US has more than 350 zoos. The total number of AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums is 238.
– Over 30 US zoos have more than 1 million visitors a year. Disney’s Animal Kingdom has the most with 9.5 million visitors each year.
– The Philadelphia Zoo is the oldest zoo in the US. It opened on July 1, 1874.
– The oldest running zoo in the world is the Vienna Zoo in Schonbrunn. It was founded in 1752.

Queens for a Day March 20, 2022

It has been almost one year since I visited the delightful 18 acre Queens Zoo. My goal was to see their adorable eight month old Andean bear cubs. I was not disappointed. The cubs were active until late morning. They got tired pretty much the same time that I did. I was charmed by the noisy but beautiful thick-billed parrots, lynx, pumas, elk, sea lions, bison, family farm and of course their pair of pudu. I encourage you to visit while these cubs are still young. You too can be Queen (or King) for a day.

The New York Botanical Garden’s orchid show is in its 19th year. Once again Jeff Leatham’s bold and colorful vision unfolds through captivating installations and designs, transforming the historic Enid A. Haupt Conservatory into a different color experience and visual effect, like the turn of a kaleidoscope. Orchid towers of orange, yellow, and green, undulating fields of white, and overhead plumes of purple, together with artistic embellishments and a kaleidoscopic tunnel of lights, will delight visitors now thru May 1, 2022.

There is something special about the first real snow fall of the season. Friday’s NYC winter wonderland only lasted a few short hours but it blanketed the city with a pristine, fluffy, white covering. I salute all of the people who have to keep the city running during this type of weather. Me? I do not drive nor do I have to shovel and I take mass transit. So I grabbed my camera and headed to my home base, the Central Park Zoo. It has been about two months since I posted CPZ photos. Hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoyed taking them.

Today’s montage completes 18 years of my sending out these Sunday photos. By my calculations that’s over 900 photo montages. Oh my! Thanks for coming along for the ride. I think some of you have been with me for the entire 18 years. I am thankful for that. I am not going to harp on what another strange year this has been as the seemingly never ending pandemic continues. That said – I leave you as always with no ‘ifs, just ends and butts’. Wishing everyone a happy and healthy new year. Let’s start anew in ’22.

I like trains. Admittedly I had never been to the holiday train show at the New York Botanical Garden but decided this year to do it. It is extraordinary. My socks were almost knocked off my feet. I was the first one to enter this marvelous exhibit and had most of it to myself for about 30 minutes. I was blown away by the detail and the amount of work that had gone into making this show. There are more than two dozen model trains and trolleys making their way past nearly 200 miniature NYC landmarks, all made out of natural materials like leaves, seeds, twigs, bark and acorns. The show is on until January 23rd. I know you will enjoy it and encourage you to go during the week to avoid what surely will be enormous crowds. All aboard!

My October obsession with all things bats and pumpkins has come to an end with last Sunday’s adult photo session at the Central Park Zoo. Fun and enrichment was had by all species. I usually post something about our having to turn the clocks today as Daylight Savings Time ends. If you enjoyed those posts – here is the one from last year. Enjoy that extra hour of sleep.

Someone who studies bats (the flying mammal) is a Chiropterologist. I often refer to October as ‘Batober.’ I love bats and am fascinated by them. The scientific name for bats is Chiroptera, which is Greek for “hand wing.” That’s because bats have four long fingers and a thumb, each connected to the next by a thin layer of skin. Sadly bats are much maligned and feared. Here are 10 reasons you should love bats. The photo above is of course the gang that lives with me at Casa Lobo.
