It’s that time of year when we recognize and celebrate the dedicated zookeepers who keep our zoos and aquariums humming. Zookeeper faces may change from year to year but the hard work, resourcefulness and commitment remain the same. I salute you all and especially the staff at my home base, the Central Park Zoo. You allow me to take your photos while you perform your tasks with good humor and I appreciate that. We are open 365 days a year, thru rain, snow, summer heat and all holidays. National Zookeeper Week starts today. How about if you go to a zoo this week tell a zookeeper how much they are appreciated?

In my not very zealous quest to find a new senior dog to bring home I found Pete.(Note to my friends who are very sure I need another dog…I have not given up my doggie search but have just gotten side tracked for a bit). Pete is about one to two years old and walked into my friend’s yard and began to hang around. After a few free meals Pete got the idea that inside was much cozier than  outside. That same friend gave me my other two wonderful cats, Audrey and Roberta, almost six years ago. So how could I say no to this new offer. Pete moved in three weeks ago today and is fitting in perfectly. If you are on facebook, you can follow the daily adventures of Audrey, Robert and Pete.

Today is a big day in NYC. The 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots is being celebrated with a larger than ever parade down Fifth Avenue. It is going to be loud and proud. Today’s salute features photos from previous Pride parades as seen from my small perch at Casa Lobo. So much progress has been made but more needs to be done. Have fun and be safe. The top photo is One-eyed Jack from last years festivities. That little guy crossed over the rainbow bridge last November. Miss him every day.

I am on the road this weekend but prepared a salute to my home base, the Central Park Zoo before I left town. Enjoy some of our zoo’s amazing collection and meet one of our new galagos boys in the title photo. You can see them upstairs in the zoo’s Tropic Zone.

Last Sunday’s photo enrichment session at the Central Park Zoo was lots of fun for both the animals and photographers. It was a glorious day. The sun was out, the temperature ideal and the animals all set to be enriched. A special shout out to our amazing zookeepers who created the enrichment items. Enjoy!

As most of you know, the Central Park Zoo is my home base. While fall is my favorite season I admit to being captivated with spring too. Our cool, rainy weather has made everything green and colorful. Today is our final zoo photo session of the season featuring flowers as animal enrichment. I am optimistic it will be a successful, fun visit for all. Photos, next week.

The photo session is called Spring Flowers and will be from 8:30 to 10:30 on May 19, 2019 – click here to sign up. There are still a few spaces left.

Brooklyn’s New York Aquarium March 24, 2019

The New York Aquarium is the oldest continuing operating aquarium in the US. It opened in Manhattan’s Battery Park Castle Garden in 1896. If you have ever boarded a ferry to take you to the Statue of Liberty that’s near where it was located. In 1957 it was relocated to Brooklyn’s Coney Island (and yes, I remember the opening). The Aquarium is part of the Wildlife Conservation Society which also runs four other parks including the Bronx Zoo, Central Park Zoo (my home base), Prospect Park Zoo and the Queens Zoo. The Aquarium was severely damaged by Hurricane Sandy in October of 2012.  A small, dedicated staff remained at the facility and saved over 90% of the animals in the collection. Fast forward to this past June and the Aquarium’s newest exhibit, Ocean Wonders: Sharks opened on June 30, 2018. It was time for a visit and we were not disappointed. Go visit and don’t forget to stroll down the boardwalk for some Nathan’s hot dogs and fries afterwards. Yum.

Today is St. Patrick’s Day. It is customary to wear green clothing, shamrocks or an accessory; which is called the “wearing of the green“. Many of our Central Park Zoo animals sport green everyday. Erin go Bragh!
